Asylum for the Jews of France? April 17, 2015. Over the past few years, there have been a number of deadly and horrific attacks against Jewish people in Europe. Targeted by radical Muslims, Jews have been murdered in a Kosher market, outside a synagogue, and at a Jewish daycare facility. They have been targeted for attack at a Jewish Community Center, and there have been hundreds of lesser (but still frightening) instances of anti-Semitism. The Jews of France are not alone. But is that enough? First, it ...

Refugees Come to America–To Sing! April 23, 2015. In Asylees and Refugees. 8220;If I could, I would return tomorrow.” It’s a beautiful and sad testament to a life lived in exile, and it is not an uncommon story. The Refugee All Stars embody the old proverb, “It ain’t about how hard you hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward.” (Balboa 3:16). In that vein, one of my favorite musicians is Enrico Macias. Like many people who have experi...

The Border Problem, Solved. June 11, 2014. We’ve been hearing a lot lately about the dramatic increase of asylum seekers. For some politicians, even considering thinking about possibly looking into immigration reform can be harmful. Regardless of the reasons behind it, the surge of people arriving at our Southern border has created real problems for the asylum system and for all applicants, many of whom are facing long, seemingly indefinite, delays. So what can be done about the situation? There are obvi...

Why Has the Asylum Office Skipped My Case? March 6, 2014. If you are an asylum seeker who filed an affirmative asylum case between about January 2013 and October 2013, you probably have not yet been interviewed, and your case has–seemingly–disappeared into a black hole. Meanwhile, other asylum seekers who filed after you are being interviewed and receiving decisions. So what gives? The storage room for backlogged asylum cases. Where Cato Gets It Wrong on Asylum. April 30, 2014. The Cato Institute’s Alex Nowrasteh recently published a piece in the Huffington Post called Saving the Asylum System. The title accurately reflects the author’s point, and of course I agree that our asylum system should be preserved (and–really–cherished). But where Mr. Nowrasteh gets it wrong, I think, is his analysis of the problem. Recipe for a refugee: Take one economic migrant, add persecutors, mix thoroughly. And a whopping 45% of defensive asylum.

My Asylum Case Is Delayed; What Can I Do? February 26, 2015. Asylum cases filed during the Jurassic period are now being interviewed. Most recently, the Asylum Office changed its policy. Anyway, let’s get to it. If your case is delayed, what can you do about it? There are several actions you can take to try to get a faster interview date. None of them is guaranteed to work, but–depending on your circumstances–some may be worth a try. The bottom line here is that the short list may be a way to get an earl...
