We ran out of time on Day 2 to see more down the Chain of Craters Road, so after our hair-raising visit to Devil's Throat, we headed back and out of the park down to the coast where the current active lava flow is spilling into the ocean. A few miles down Chain of Craters Road is the Hilina Pali Road, an almost 9 mile drive through beautiful forest, devastated lava fields and new growth. It was spectacular, and the end of the road showcased 30 miles of gorgeous coastline. The nene, the endangered Hawaiian goos. He end of the road. Dang, their cute when they get along. As we drove down, we passed many spots where the lava was cut out to make way for the road. As we got closer to the coast, we lost quite a bit of altitude (4000 feet). A small part of Kilauea Crater - the dip in the distance leads to Kilauea Iki where we hiked. Halema'uma'a Crater inside Kilauea Crater. The one and only family picture of the trip. Sad. I know. From here we checked out the steam vents, which seem to be everywhere, and stopped for lunch at the Volcano House (don't go for the food, go for the VIEW! Beautiful A, enjoying the view.

A lava tube is where the lava travels underground, again. most impressive. The first section of the tube is lighted and maintained, but there is a section further on that is not - bring a flashlight - which, of course, we brought 4! The maintained part of the lava tube.
