Anything for a change. Why not a Mendocino motor. My son said bet you can't make one of these. OK - I fell for it. It has been a fascinating diversion while I wait for radio parts on order. The only grizzle is the cost of neodymium magnets which do allow a good performance. Here is the result, and yes - we must build another but prettier one. I spent much time agonising over how to get my hexbeam in the air! Over a period of 3 weeks I got quotes for a variety of masts from NZ$600 to 2400 British pounds! Was made either side of Christmas 2009 and raised to 24 feet second week in Feb 2010. Since I had to try and buy suitable copper wire in NZ it seemed expedient (and lazy) to buy a plug and play set of wire elements for 20, 15 and 10 mtrs. So I took delivery of the wires from Anthony David. Far away in Wales. The SWR numbers. Must be a tribute to his measurements! The glass fibre poles were made by CTS. At this stage it seems I had achieved one important objective. I had kept the weight down very well.
Trap dipole antenna, 3 bands.

My trap dipole exists in the form it does because, like many of us, the garden is too small. However, these dipoles are fairly predictable and not too hard to make. Since I had the dimensions and some RG58 I made another trap dipole for 80/40/20 from scratch. It works very well. The call W3DZZ is seen on the plans page I have, so that is where the credits might belong. It has worked well for me - still does. Like most trap dipoles it is fairly narrow banded. Both traps are wound on a 43mm diameter.

Today I removed the base from my beautiful Russian GMI-11 tube. This was to be for my next linear amp. The glass is cracked across one of the pins! It is extremely unlikey to have broken in transit, it was very well packed, mounted in its base and. The carton was not damaged. The glass on the base seems about 1/4 thick, it's rugged. The socket pins are floating relieving stress. Education always was expensive. Irrespective of blame or conjecture as to when the glass was cracked here lies a lesson.
