We are delighted to announce that we have had 6 radio class members sit for their Amateur Radio Operators Certificate over the weekend 30-31 October 2004, and they have all been successful. Some are going on to gain competency in Morse code also. We look forward to having their participation in amateur radio activities in the near future. Branch 08 members take an active interest in contests and have achieved good results in the VK/ZL trans-Tasman contest over the last 3 years. The National Field day contest is another favourite with members, and for many years Eastern Southland has had an enthusiastic team competing. An operational HF amateur radio station has also been established in the Pioneer Park Museum in Gore, along with a display of vintage radio equipment. Pioneer Park Station Display.

Branch 08 emergency response caravan (AREC) was on display at Edendale crankup 25th January 2014. A good turnout of club members manned the caravan, and the public showed interest in the radio equipment featured this year. We also had a few visiting hams drop in to say hello. The weather was fine, there were plenty of good trade displays and food stalls. Alan Bennet ZL4GZ chats to visiting ham Lindsay Strong ZL4LDS and partner.

ZL4AL - Branch 08 Amateur Radio Emergency Communications (AREC)

Amateur Radio Emergency Corps). Branch 08 has an active emergency communications section which is well equipped to assist in emergency and sporting events. It has a caravan set-up with suitable HF, VHF, and UHF radios. Search and Rescue (SAR) and Civil Defence (CD) is supported and has also provided communications for car rallies for many years. Recently a new generator was purchased with generous assistance from the Gore Town and Country Club.

ZL4AL - Branch 08 NZART Repeaters and repeater info.

Branch 08 operates a 2 metre repeater Gore 695 situated on the Hokonui Hills not far from the High Peak site. It was this proximity to other telecommunications sites that resulted in continued interference received by our Hamtronics repeater. We had two site visits with technicians and installed and bonded two new 19 racks, but all to no avail. We installed another temporary repeater and found that the problems disappeared overnight.
