Quilts across the aisle. August 25, 2016. I wasn’t a model doctoral student. Me, during the fun experimental stage of the thesis. Trying new things, loving the travel. A good student not only undertakes their experimental work, but writes it up in a timely fashion, publishing in good journals along the way. I loved the experimental work, but faltered during the write-up. It took a change in supervisor for me to get it all done, and was helped by tackling the writing itself as a research subject. The orig...

May | 2015 | quilts across the aisle

https://acrosstheaislequilts.wordpress.com/2015/05

Quilts across the aisle. I am a Maker. May 30, 2015. There are no quilters in my family tree, but there are knitters and crocheters. My Nana made a granny square blanket for each of her 21 grandchildren, and was working on the greats when she passed. My first attempt at quilting travelled up and down the North Island for six years, as we shifted for my husbands work. It was a stain-glass window pattern, quilt as you go, and king-sized. Slightly ambitious for a first project. Eventually I gave...I promise...

You know you’re a quilter when… | quilts across the aisle

Quilts across the aisle. You know you’re a quilter when…. August 1, 2015. You know you’re a quilter, when finding other Quilters cast-off blocks feels like uncovering hidden treasures. Out came an appliquéd block and a pillow form, purchased at some stage in the distant past. It had shifted from the Manawatu, to the Waikato, then back again….so it was about time it was used, before it qualified as a mid-century antique, and gained significantly in value. And in a short time, I had a cushion for the sofa.

Quilts across the aisle. A little carried away. August 12, 2015. Midnight in the Garden – an unexpected quilt. I am supposed to be making two versions of the Midnight at the Oasis quilt by Jen Kingwell. I even blogged about it ( here. I will still make one version of the Oasis quilt in the lighter colour way, especially since I ordered the fabric for one of the borders last weekend, while in Wellington. Midnight at the Oasis – Paper Piecing. My plans for the week…. The rest of the week is likely to consi...

Friday Finish – My very own quilt. | quilts across the aisle

https://acrosstheaislequilts.wordpress.com/2015/07/30/friday-finish-my-very-own-quilt

Quilts across the aisle. Friday Finish – My very own quilt. July 30, 2015. It’s taken a long time, but the Gypsy Wife #1 is finally finished. I spent the middle of this week home, so after the necessary events of the day were finished, I devoted my time to machine quilting, making scrappy binding, then machine binding this quilt. Back to the quilt. Some of my favourite blocks, and one I view as a bit of a fail. Guess which is which? Sidewalks by October Afternoon for Riley Blake. I saw the original QAL.

http://romanyquilting.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html

Patchwork, quilting, stitcheries - I love them all. Welcome to tales of my stitching life, home, family and friends. Tuesday, April 28, 2015. Meeting up with the Sew Wots again. Mary’s quilt for Ronald McDonald House. Carol’s chicken and egg quilt. Carol had more show and tell for us, she had just completed a pretty lilac quilt as a gift for her sister. With beautiful stitchery blocks designed by the very talented Bronwyn Hayes, and sprinkled with yo-yos, it is sure to be a treasured gift indeed. Moira w...

Finished Quilts {my early years}. Saturday, 28 February 2015. My prep for the sewing day. Oh and this too. Ha-ha courtesy of Vevo cafe Titirangi! Four more new blocks done! Our Monday Modern group got together today for a full-on sewing day. It's the first time I've gone to a sewing day and it was alot of fun! A few of us, me included, are in the middle of making the Moda Modern Building Blocks. They all really do look so very different! Others of course were working on lots of other projects. Quilty Folk: A Happy Finish

http://quiltyfolk.blogspot.com/2015/08/a-happy-finish.html

The Courage to Feel Creative Series. Tuesday, August 4, 2015. Happy Flowers is finally a true blue finished quilt! It's only been in the hoop since April. Um, yeah. A couple other quilts sort of nudged it out of the way. I think maybe because the stitching wasn't going to change the look very much? I don't know that I will ever use linen to make quilt blocks again though. Love the way the fabric feels and it was a fun experiment. Bottom line? Loving those polka dots. Patchwork, quilting, stitcheries - I love them all. Welcome to tales of my stitching life, home, family and friends. Saturday, August 1, 2015. As usual, there was a lot happening, and some beautiful work on show. Such as these gorgeous paper pieced diamonds that Janelle was working on – this project has been tucked away for a while, she commented. Just look at those beautiful colours, I just love those pinks and greens together. Janelle’s paper pieced diamonds. Kaye stitching on buttons and beads. I love...

http://quiltyfolk.blogspot.com/2013/05/more-progress-on-string-blocks.html

The Courage to Feel Creative Series. Wednesday, May 22, 2013. More Progress on the String Blocks. I'm still working on my string quilt, hoping to have the top completed by the entry date Rachel has set for her String Fever. Things are getting a little crazy around here as we're trying to get ready for our annual camping trip. Can you believe it's been raining every day? Auditioning a sashing fabric. A plain cream fabric just sorta felt flat and lifeless to me during the auditioning. Once I had several ro...

http://quiltyfolk.blogspot.com/2015/08/always-always-another-quilt-in-hoop.html

The Courage to Feel Creative Series. Thursday, August 6, 2015. Always, Always Another Quilt in the Hoop. Sometimes it's hard to 'see' how the stitching is going to look in terms of a fully stitched quilt. Everything is right there inside the hoop and there's no real sense of texture. Once again I settled with lighter colored thread as all the darker colors seemed to distract from my pretty scraps. Old Fashioned Strings in the hoop. Looking at the completed stitching. Across the Alps 2012 or maybe later...

Across the Alps 2012 or maybe later. Comfortably tucked away into my mid-30s I (re)started running to pursue an extraordinary, yet brain-damagingly hopeless sportive feat: To run the 112km alpine Cro-Magnon Extreme Race 2012. From the Piemonte to the Cote d'Azur. Well - I failed, mostly due to knee injury and fatherhood. Yet, I'm still running and hoping to finish the race one day. This is hence a blog about the joys, dreams and failures of running. Monday, 19 November 2012. What do I learn from this?
