alpineberry: Quick and Daring

http://alpineberry.blogspot.com/2012/02/quick-and-daring.html

Monday, February 27, 2012. February 2012 host was DB co-founder Lisa. The lovely Lisa asked us to make a quick bread. What is a quick bread? Well, it's basically bread that is quick to make since it requires no fermentation/rise and no kneading. Quick bread is leavened not by a starter or yeast, but by baking soda, baking powder, and/or eggs. I also tried my hand at a gluten-free quick bread. Using this pumpkin bread. Gluten-free coconut sweet potato bread. Lisa stepped in last minute and challenged us t...

alpineberry: Burger Macarons

http://alpineberry.blogspot.com/2011/06/burger-macarons.html

Wednesday, June 08, 2011. For months I have been obsessed with the idea of a Parisian macaron (gerbet) that looks like a burger. I finally got around to making some just in time to celebrate the upcoming Father's Day, a day typically associated with the outdoors and firing up the grill, on June 19th. And what is more father- and grill- friendly than burgers? And for those that like a little tomato on their burger, I thinly sliced sour cherries. I've been using the French meringue method where the granula...

alpineberry: Coffee, Beer, and Beer Coffee Cake

http://alpineberry.blogspot.com/2012/02/coffee-beer-and-beer-coffee-cake.html

Sunday, February 12, 2012. Coffee, Beer, and Beer Coffee Cake. I am quite taken by the treats in the pastry case at Blue Bottle Coffee. It seems that their pastries are meant to be paired with coffee. I guess third wave coffee places take into account "coffee pairing". It's similar to pairing wine or beer with food, but I think there is a bit more leeway when pairing food* with coffee. I decided on Fort Bragg's North Coast Brewing's Old Rasputin (Russian imperial stout, 9%ABV). And although I am not much...

alpineberry: Nutella Cookies

http://alpineberry.blogspot.com/2006/08/nutella-cookies.html

Sunday, August 13, 2006. I don’t know how a chocolate hazelnut spread like Nutella can even be compared to peanut butter. They are completely different. It’s like comparing apples and oranges. They both have their place in the kitchen. But it wasn’t until recently that they co-existed in my. 1 1/3 cup all-purpose flour. 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa. 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon. 1/4 tsp baking powder. 1/4 tsp baking soda. 7 tbsp unsalted butter, at room temp. 2/3 cup granulated sugar. 1/3 cup light brown sugar.

Experiments in the kitchen. June 27, 2009. June Daring Bakers Challenge: Bakewell tart. The June Daring Bakers’ challenge was hosted by Jasmine of Confessions of a Cardamom Addict. And Annemarie of Ambrosia and Nectar. They chose a Traditional (UK) Bakewell Tart… er… pudding that was inspired by a rich baking history dating back to the 1800’s in England. Check out their blogs for a discussion of the history behind the “tart…er…pudding” and the recipe. I was pretty happy with how the tart turned out overa...

Ordinary time : . Reflections on faith, hope, and love in the midst of life. And a few recipes for the journey. Sermon, Fourth Sunday in Lent (7:45am, 11am services). For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. So, I have to confess that when I read this Gospel passage, it provokes something deep within me. It strikes a nerve. Would God really condemn my mother? At the time of the Gospel’s writing, this wasn’...
