The past week has been really hot here in southeast Texas, with highs getting pretty close to the 100F mark. We've been avoiding the heat and enjoying our air-conditioning but our birds have been suffering. Our young male and female Northern Cardinals have been looking stressed, too. Tuesday, July 21, 2015. I take nature pictures. Follow aspiring photographer Cameron Carver on his journeys around the country to photograph amazing animals and landscapes and do a little birding along the way. Wednesday, February 24, 2010. LRGV Trip from January. Luckily, this visit corresponded with the Bentsen Rio Grande Bare-throated Tiger Heron and the first sighting of the Northern Wheatear. However, I struck out on the Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl and Rose-throated Becard. Labels: Bare-throated Tiger Heron. Me in a Nutshell.

SE Texas Birding & Wildlife Watching: Down by the Bay
http://jeffincypress.blogspot.com/2015/08/down-by-bay.html
SE Texas Birding and Wildlife Watching. Jeff Mohamed blogs about birds and other wildlife in the Houston area - and occasionally farther afield. Sunday, August 02, 2015. Down by the Bay. In the event, there were fewer birds visible than on any of my (many) previous visits. After half-an-hour, we had seen only a couple each of Great Egrets, Snowy Egrets and Cattle Egrets, and a few Yellow-crowned Night Herons (below). At first glance, the main bay area seemed fairly empty except for a few Egrets on small ...

SE Texas Birding and Wildlife Watching. Jeff Mohamed blogs about birds and other wildlife in the Houston area - and occasionally farther afield. Monday, July 28, 2014. Late Saturday morning we spent an hour in the park around the San Jacinto Monument. To be honest, the park isn't one of my favorite birding sites: Although it can host some good birds, the latter are usually too far away for comfortable viewing and photographing. So why did we visit? One of two Brown Pelicans was much closer to the shore.

Different Strokes for Differernt Folks. The most popular pictures were ones of a Vermilion Flycatcher (798 likes) Ruby-throated Hummingbird (766 likes). It's easy to see why people like these: They are sharp close-ups of two really beautiful birds. Over 300 people liked each of the two shots below. American Coots are very common, r...

When Even a Bad Photo Is Good. I took the photos below at Baytown on Sunday. As you can see, they aren't very good to say the least. So why did I bother keeping rather than deleting them? Labels: Common Ground Dove. Wednesday, November 26, 2014. Luckily, there were a few more birds in and around the site's various ponds and channels.

SE Texas Birding & Wildlife Watching: An Old Friend

SE Texas Birding and Wildlife Watching. Jeff Mohamed blogs about birds and other wildlife in the Houston area - and occasionally farther afield. Monday, July 13, 2015. Saturday we headed over to Brazos Bend State Park. We've visited this park so often over the years that it feels like an old friend. We meant to go there several weeks ago but the park was closed because of flooding and it did not re-open until last Wednesday. The occasional young White Ibis wandered across the trail ahead of us. Creekfiel...

SE Texas Birding and Wildlife Watching. Jeff Mohamed blogs about birds and other wildlife in the Houston area - and occasionally farther afield. Sunday, March 29, 2015. Now that spring has arrived, the bird situation is changing on the CyFair campus on Barker-Cypress Road. Our year-round residents are still here, of course, and every morning echoes with the songs of Northern Mockingbird (below), Red-winged Blackbirds and Northern Cardinals (below). I'm hoping that this spring migration will produce more ...
