Birding in the Rio Grande Valley and sometimes elsewhere. Thursday, May 7, 2015. Estero Shorebirds, 5/7/15. There were quite a few Least Sandpipers around, The yellow legs and long drooping bill give them away. This one is redder than the field guides show. The second is a little less red. They are brown during the winter. The black legs and short, thicker bill make this a Semipalmated Sandpiper. You can also make out the partial webbing between the toes. The Stilt Sandpipers are easy to ID in the spring.

Antshrike's Bird Blog: March 2014

http://antshrike.blogspot.com/2014_03_01_archive.html

Birding in the Rio Grande Valley and sometimes elsewhere. Tuesday, March 25, 2014. South Padre Island, 3/25/14. After reading Michael Marsdens post on Texbirds last night I decided I needed to get out to the Island. The wind was still blowing from the north and it was a very good day for March with eleven species of warblers. My favorite was this super sharp Blue-winged Warbler that I saw saw quite a few times but it took a couple of hours to finally get a photo. Yellow-throated Vireos pass through here ...

Birding in the Rio Grande Valley and sometimes elsewhere. Sunday, October 26, 2014. Sabine's Gull, Brown Booby at Boca Chica Jetty, 10/26/14. I missed yesterday's pelagic birding trip out of South Padre Island yesterday mostly because it filled up so fast and I wasn't on the ball. But I didn't mind as I had a really good butterfly day. You bet it was! Cameron County bird #377! It's a Brown Booby! This Franklin's Gull was easy to pick out among the Laughing Gulls. Links to this post. Sal del Rey, 10/15/14.

Antshrike's Bird Blog: September 2014

http://antshrike.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html

Birding in the Rio Grande Valley and sometimes elsewhere. Monday, September 29, 2014. A couple of weeks in the Philippines, 9/9-25/14. A bare tree in the vacant lot next door would attract birds passing though the neighborhood, but they would often get chased away by the wintering Brown Shrike. When the shrike wasn't looking, three species of munias would feed in the grass. Most common was the Chestnut Munia. The third commonly seen munia was the White-bellied Munia. One weekend we traveled over to the o...

Antshrike's Bird Blog: August 2014

http://antshrike.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html

Birding in the Rio Grande Valley and sometimes elsewhere. Tuesday, August 26, 2014. Sugar House Pond, 8/25/14. I checked out the Sugar House Pond this morning hoping to find some good Hidalgo County stuff. The pond is a 40 acre impoundment for the effluent from the sugar refinery located on FM 1425 north of FM 107, and is just north of the railroad tracts. It is located on the left but is not visible from the highway. You have to climb the grassy berm and then this lies before you. Links to this post.

SE Texas Birding and Wildlife Watching. Jeff Mohamed blogs about birds and other wildlife in the Houston area - and occasionally farther afield. Sunday, July 26, 2015. Hotter than You Know What. The past week has been really hot here in southeast Texas, with highs getting pretty close to the 100F mark. We've been avoiding the heat and enjoying our air-conditioning but our birds have been suffering. Our young male and female Northern Cardinals have been looking stressed, too. Tuesday, July 21, 2015. http://cameroncarver.blogspot.com/2010/02/lrgv-trip-from-january.html

I take nature pictures. Follow aspiring photographer Cameron Carver on his journeys around the country to photograph amazing animals and landscapes and do a little birding along the way. Wednesday, February 24, 2010. LRGV Trip from January. Luckily, this visit corresponded with the Bentsen Rio Grande Bare-throated Tiger Heron and the first sighting of the Northern Wheatear. However, I struck out on the Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl and Rose-throated Becard. Labels: Bare-throated Tiger Heron. Me in a Nutshell.

SE Texas Birding and Wildlife Watching. Jeff Mohamed blogs about birds and other wildlife in the Houston area - and occasionally farther afield. Sunday, August 02, 2015. Down by the Bay. In the event, there were fewer birds visible than on any of my (many) previous visits. After half-an-hour, we had seen only a couple each of Great Egrets, Snowy Egrets and Cattle Egrets, and a few Yellow-crowned Night Herons (below). At first glance, the main bay area seemed fairly empty except for a few Egrets on small ...

SE Texas Birding and Wildlife Watching. Jeff Mohamed blogs about birds and other wildlife in the Houston area - and occasionally farther afield. Monday, July 28, 2014. Late Saturday morning we spent an hour in the park around the San Jacinto Monument. To be honest, the park isn't one of my favorite birding sites: Although it can host some good birds, the latter are usually too far away for comfortable viewing and photographing. So why did we visit? One of two Brown Pelicans was much closer to the shore.

SE Texas Birding and Wildlife Watching. Jeff Mohamed blogs about birds and other wildlife in the Houston area - and occasionally farther afield. Thursday, August 06, 2015. Different Strokes for Differernt Folks. The most popular pictures were ones of a Vermilion Flycatcher (798 likes) Ruby-throated Hummingbird (766 likes). It's easy to see why people like these: They are sharp close-ups of two really beautiful birds. Over 300 people liked each of the two shots below. American Coots are very common, r...

SE Texas Birding and Wildlife Watching. Jeff Mohamed blogs about birds and other wildlife in the Houston area - and occasionally farther afield. Monday, July 13, 2015. Saturday we headed over to Brazos Bend State Park. We've visited this park so often over the years that it feels like an old friend. We meant to go there several weeks ago but the park was closed because of flooding and it did not re-open until last Wednesday. The occasional young White Ibis wandered across the trail ahead of us. Now that spring has arrived, the bird situation is changing on the CyFair campus on Barker-Cypress Road. Our year-round residents are still here, of course, and every morning echoes with the songs of Northern Mockingbird (below), Red-winged Blackbirds and Northern Cardinals (below). Friday, May 15, 2015. Vintage Inspired Fabric Banner. It's that time of the year to celebrate. And what better way to do that then with a cute Vintage Inspired Fabric Banner. It's really easy to do and I'm going to show you how! I found these great fabrics at Hobby Lobby. I bought 1/4 of a yard of each. I used a heavy piece of cardstock to create a template. Using a ruler I measured out how large I wanted each pennant on the banner to be. It's roughly 4" wide and 6.5" wide (when folded). However, I did n...
