Following Learning: May 2015

Simon Gregg's thoughts on lessons. Thursday, 14 May 2015. A scale, from the Latin word scala. We've just finished a series of seven lessons on scaling. With the Year 4 classes (8 and 9 year olds). It's not been a very prominent part of any curriculum I've worked with, but for a long time it's seemed to me such a ubiquitous bit of maths, that I was keen that our children have a handle on it. The immediate prompt that made me finally plan the lessons was a comment by Paula Beardell Krieg. Here, what goes t...

Daphne has only flown once, three years ago when I took her home from her program. In the end, Daphne did great. She was polite and non-intrusive and...

Following Learning: November 2014
http://followinglearning.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html
Simon Gregg's thoughts on lessons. Monday, 24 November 2014. The list goes on. Another item for the list. When I was a kid at school I got into programming in Basic. It was mathematical in ways that maths lessons weren't. For instance, the only time I ever asked a teacher how to do something that hadn't been taught was when I needed a bit of maths for a program I was writing. How do I stop this weather data looking so spiky? You need a moving average.". I used the Microworlds. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Saturday, February 28, 2015. 23 still isn't prime (sometimes). Who: J1 and J2. Where: walking around the neighborhood. When: after lunch on a saturday. In response to our earlier discussion that 23 is prime in the integers but not in the rationals, someone on Google Plus (either Curious Cheetah. Mentioned that 23 isn't prime in base 9. That led to another good discussion with the kids. Labels: 5 year old. Wednesday, February 25, 2015. Where: our reception room. When: after swimming lessons. 1) How to dea...

Three J's Learning: December 2014
http://3jlearneng.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html
Sunday, December 28, 2014. Where: at the dining table and in front of our house. When: after lunch (observations from 19 December/day 18). Has made some progress. The root has sprouted. Maybe it is actually upside down and the avocado is confused? The pit split in the middle. There is a sprout in the middle. Some of the pit has peeled off. The exposed pit is a bit more rough than when we examined it last week. it feels like bumpy wax. Maybe it is actually upside down and the avocado is confused? The avoc...

MATH and SCIENCE with my KIDS. Math, nature, and kids collide. January 10, 2015. Here are some shadblow (Amelanchier canadensis) or serviceberry leaves that I collected from my yard this past Fall. Their tattered appearance speaks of the heavy use that the local ecology has made of them. Not only did they provide sugars … Continue reading →. September 17, 2014. Fruit in its Season. Three J's Learning: May 2015

Sunday, May 31, 2015. Twist on an old puzzle and our number scavenger hunt. Who: J1, J2, J3. When: after lunch, before violin lessons. What did we use: mini-white board and things around our neighborhood. The first twist was to find how many answers there are to this puzzle. You can see us mid-work, having already identified two choices for the circle and several options for the other two shapes. Our number scavenger hunt. Last September, but I didn't really appreciate how good it would be for us until w...

Three J's Learning: a physical feeling for densities
http://3jlearneng.blogspot.com/2015/07/a-physical-feeling-for-densities.html
Monday, July 27, 2015. A physical feeling for densities. Thanks to Mom, our stair number line recently got a (partial) refresh with some snazzy new number posters. This stimulated a new exploration by J1 to study how dense different groups of numbers are. Well, that wasn't how he phrased it . . . J1's dialogue as he played on the stairs:. Hmm, what if I walk up the multiples of 2? Walks up skipping stairs, no problem here. Oh, that's pretty easy, but J3 might find it tricky. 1, 4, what's next ? 16, oh no!

Following Learning: April 2015
http://followinglearning.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html
Simon Gregg's thoughts on lessons. Sunday, 12 April 2015. When I put this model of learning down this morning it was fine. I go away for five minutes, and when I come back someone had knocked it over:. Whoever it was - I don't want to know - just be more careful with my models. Perhaps I should explain myself. This model ( link to source. Luckily the makers of this diagram have actually built the instability of the model into the picture! What is maths good for? The story, of ". Have You Been to Delphi?
