Saturday, November 03, 2012. After she passed away I felt the world was playing a cruel trick on me. I had just lost my mother and now was expected to go to work everyday to continue to help mother's bring new life into the world, often accompanied by their own mother's to guide the process. How could I do this? In the first few months I often had to step out of the room of my laboring patient to compose myself, too overwhelmed by the story that would never be mine. The opening speaker began and the crowd was soon hushed as the speaker took us through the stories of her work with victims of violence, prostitution and sexual slavery that were at once horrifying, mesmerizing and moving.
