Sunday, October 17, 2010. And radiation. and salt. and pressure. and dessication. Life is tenacious. From the peaks of the tallest mountains to the depths of the ocean floor there is life. Environments completely inhospitable to humans serve as oases for organisms that thrive in extremes of temperature, pressure, salinity, and radiation. We label these organisms " extremophiles. Grand Prismatic Spring, Yellowstone National Park. Within the domain archaea. Salt Flats at Lake Magadi, Kenya. Organisms capab...

Wednesday, April 6, 2011. After some additional research, I've discovered that 'landscape genetics' is the field that (most directly) addresses the interrelationship between genomes and their environments. I found a great article about this emerging discipline here. I really think the next ten years will see an explosion in this area. Exciting stuff! Posted by David Mangold. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). On The Pale Blue Dot: NASA Discovery: Kepler-22b, an Earth-like Planet?
http://www.onthepalebluedot.com/2011/12/nasa-discovery-kepler-22b-earth-like.html
Tuesday, December 6, 2011. NASA Discovery: Kepler-22b, an Earth-like Planet? The discovery of Kepler-22b, a potentially earth-like planet about 600 light-years away, which is orbiting within the habitable zone of its central star. The habitable zone for a planet is the range around its star where solar radiation is sufficient to maintain liquid water at the planet's surface, and is dependent both on the characteristics of the parent star and the planet itself (see below, courtesy of NASA). NASA Discovery...

On The Pale Blue Dot: The Geonome: Putting Genetic Information in Its Place
http://www.onthepalebluedot.com/2011/03/geonome-putting-genetic-information-in.html
Sunday, March 20, 2011. The Geonome: Putting Genetic Information in Its Place. Over the past five years, the cost of genetic sequencing. Has dropped by a factor of approximately 3000. Yep, that's right. Gathering raw sequence data cost about $1000 per megabase (1 million base pairs) in 2006. Today the cost is around 30 cents. And a number of new sequencing technologies. Currently, genetic sequence datasets are publicly available via online databases such as GenBank. This idea is certainly too complicated...

On The Pale Blue Dot: Musings on a spider web (and other evolving structures)
http://www.onthepalebluedot.com/2011/09/musings-on-spider-web-and-other.html
Sunday, September 18, 2011. Musings on a spider web (and other evolving structures). For a few days now, in the mornings, I've noticed a spider web built between my car door and the ground. Every day I drive to work destroying the web yet each morning it has been rebuilt. This prompted me to think about how spider webs are constructed. In turn, I began to think about the way in which spiders knows how. Anything. Does the whole of an ant kingdom lie within the genes of a single queen? So tomorrow, when I ...

On The Pale Blue Dot: Bits of Behavior

Sunday, December 25, 2011. I recently took up computer programming using Python. And I've started on a new project - a simple animal movement model - which I'd like to integrate with ArcMap via the ArcPy package. Now I've got a dictionary containing my first instance of the bios class "bios1". To create 9 new, child instances in the dictionary I would do the following:. Plot of bios instance tracks over 100 calculated moves with a maximum move of 1 (arbitrary units). For key in i:. Posted by David Mangold.

Thursday, December 30, 2010. A Test of Tolerance 2. So, I finally got around to posting a more agreeable (albeit still questioning) comment on the Ark Encounter website. The jobs created by this project could do a lot to reduce unemployment. I'm sure there are many families in Kentucky that would really benefit from the presence of a large employer. If someone wants to work at the Ark Encounter, will they have to sign a statement of faith, like they do for the Creation Museum? Posted by David Mangold.
