The Peregrine Scribe: October 2010
http://maglayag.blogspot.com/2010_10_01_archive.html
I wish for nothing more than to own a battered suitcase and an open mind. Thursday, October 14, 2010. Merchants abound, indeed, in this city that inspires all, from Third World tourists to the English literary master himself, Shakespeare. 160; Picturesque buildings and gondolas along its famous canals. Photo by Homs Santos. Posted by Sibyl Adrienne. Wednesday, October 13, 2010. In the Realm of the Diwata. The mountain that is Mariang Makiling. Photo from this site. The Wandering Soles: October 2010
http://thewanderingsoles.blogspot.com/2010_10_01_archive.html
Wednesday, October 20, 2010. At almost 10 in the evening, traffic was extremely heavy on the road to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Endless lines of cars endlessly moving forward as rain threatened to fall and add to the sour mood of all the commuters. It seemed that the City of Brotherly Love was acting petulantly that day by refusing an easy and quick entrance to locals and visitors alike. There would be time for that soon enough. Thursday, October 14, 2010. A Filipino on an All-American Roadtrip. The ora...

The Wandering Soles: The realities and fake DVDs of Manila Chinatown
http://thewanderingsoles.blogspot.com/2010/10/real-mall-of-asia-and-best-fake-goods.html
Saturday, October 9, 2010. The realities and fake DVDs of Manila Chinatown. Pwede ba kita kidnapin? The streets of Manila Chinatown are rarely this empty - unless it's Holy Week or during a Manny Pacquiao fight, of course. The freshest fruit in Manila can be bought in Chinatown,. And university diplomas, pots and pans of every size and shape, Luis Buiton and Gooci bags, pet chickens, medicine (whether as exotic as seahorses for kidney problems, or as typical as cough drops) – name it, they’ve...Every are...

The Peregrine Scribe: In the Realm of the Diwata
http://maglayag.blogspot.com/2010/10/she-reclines-centuries-upon-centuries.html
I wish for nothing more than to own a battered suitcase and an open mind. Wednesday, October 13, 2010. In the Realm of the Diwata. The mountain that is Mariang Makiling. Photo from this site. Mariang Makiling lies, a deity in graceful repose, but she has yet to rest in peace. There is still work to be done. The inactive volcano stands 1,100 meters above sea level, and houses more than 4000 hectares of forest reserve. It is under the management of the University of the Philippines Los Ba. Ños College of F...

The Wandering Soles: Jolly, Green, and Giant - Life on Mt. Makiling
http://thewanderingsoles.blogspot.com/2010/10/all-american-roadtrip-from-eyes-of.html
Wednesday, October 13, 2010. Jolly, Green, and Giant - Life on Mt. Makiling. Life-long city dwellers have taken to saying, “You know, back when I was younger, there were hundreds of butterflies here, some even bigger than my hand. Now, they’re all gone because the air is so dirty.”. A butterfly as big as a hand? But, apparently, it was. In fact, it still is. Come into my garden.". The Makiling Botanic Garden is a peep into the hidden wonders of the mountain. The Makiling Botanical Gardens located inside ...

The Wandering Soles: Revisiting an old friend
http://thewanderingsoles.blogspot.com/2010/10/revisiting-old-friend.html
Sunday, October 10, 2010. Revisiting an old friend. 8220;We’re going to Puerto Galera.”. The moment my mother said these words, a rush of memories filled my head. I remembered riding a big boat, a roro. I think it’s called. I threw up once, while riding the roro. The boat trip this time around was a far cry from the roro. Commute I had done 12 years ago. For one, I didn’t ride on a roro. My mom rented a bangka. Bangkas waiting for passengers idle by the shore. Stepping onto the rocky dock, I saw that the...

The Wandering Soles: Dirty dreams in New York City
http://thewanderingsoles.blogspot.com/2010/09/dirty-dreams-in-new-york-city.html
Friday, October 1, 2010. Dirty dreams in New York City. Not at all like the movies. The filthy, gum-blackened steps of the Subway station in Jamaica, Queens, where rats fearlessly crossed pedestrians' paths, was a far cry from the bright lights of the New York City dream. No trace of Broadway glamour -that spark that made the city one of the best in the world - could be found among the human detritus piled in the corners of the 169th Street Station. Reflects the glitz of the city. 8211; Martin Buber.

The Wandering Soles: The road to heaven is good enough to eat
http://thewanderingsoles.blogspot.com/2010/10/if-it-werent-for-conspicuously-bovine.html
Monday, October 11, 2010. The road to heaven is good enough to eat. Like the yellow brick road that led Dorothy to Oz, this highway leads travelers to the Hershey compound, where a billboard with a giant Kisses mascot greets visitors. Here, the chocolate street reaches its end, only to be replaced with regular streets named Cocoa Avenue, E Chocolate Avenue, and Cherry Drive. Cupcakes beckon from behind the glass counter at the cafe inside the factory. Hershey bars cooling - yes, that's real chocolate!

The Wandering Soles: September 2010
http://thewanderingsoles.blogspot.com/2010_09_01_archive.html
Thursday, September 30, 2010. A bite of Malaysia. A melting pot of culture, Malaysia is home to the whole gamut of eastern ethnic groups, from native Malayans, to Chinese, Indians, and even small Thai, Indonesian, and European communities. It shares a colonial past with many other Asian countries, having been controlled by Great Britain in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. One of the most famous dishes in Malaysian cooking is even an adaptation of the Indian roti. Are typically eaten with curry.
