Outside of a Dog: June 2014

Outside of a Dog. Tuesday, June 10, 2014. Lucky Us by Amy Bloom. Rating: 3 stars (out of 5). Review: Reading this book felt a little like watching a silent movie: some jerky, indistinct action, interspersed with text that's supposed to illuminate the dialogue you can't hear, but doesn't necessarily help bring the story into focus. Why do others join the little group in New York? And yet, by the end of the book, I understood where the title came from, and what Bloom was trying to do. It was a satisfyi...

Outside of a Dog. Tuesday, July 29, 2014. The story not told. The Road from Gap Creek by Robert Morgan. Rating: 3 stars (out of 5). Review: When we left Hank and Julie at the end of Gap Creek. Hank and Julie have created a family, are financially stable, and overall seem to have been doing well in the years since we last saw them. How did they get there? Why did they leave again? Dunno I suppose the stories must not be very interesting, since the only family lore Annie seems to know are things that happe...

Outside of a Dog: nostalgia and foreshadowing
http://mmzlibrary.blogspot.com/2008/06/nostalgia-and-foreshadowing.html
Outside of a Dog. Monday, June 2, 2008. The Wednesday Sisters by Meg Waite Clayton. Rating: 4.5 stars (out of 5). An excellent book of the power of women's friendships, this is also a story of how these women, young mothers at the end of the 1960s, each react differently to the women's liberation movement and other cultural upheavals of that time. Outside of a Dog. Wednesday, October 22, 2014. Leaving Time by Jodi Picoult. Rating: 5 stars (out of 5). Review: I was actually breathless when I finished this book, because I read so fast to find out how it ended. Also because my heart was in my throat from all the emotion that is packed into the end. Outside of a Dog: just doesn't measure up

Outside of a Dog. Wednesday, September 3, 2014. Just doesn't measure up. The Wednesday Daughters by Meg Waite Clayton. Rating: 2 stars (out of 5). Review: I loved The Wednesday Sisters. Maybe because Clayton seems to want this book to be as weighty as the first was, but it's just not. I don't know. Whatever the reason, this is one case where the the elders really are the betters. Outside of a Dog. Thursday, May 7, 2015. Changers, Book 2: Oryon by T Cooper and Allison Glock-Cooper. But the main focus of the series seems to be more about the relationships s/he forms and the choices s/he makes. Does s/he toe the Changer line and keep the secret, or tell the truth in the interest of preserving her/his friendships and relationships from one identity to the next? These aspects of the story are what will keep me reading until the conclusion of the series. Links to this post.
