Beyond the F-Stop: July 2014

http://beyondthefstop.blogspot.com/2014_07_01_archive.html

Craig's thoughts on photography. Thursday, July 10, 2014. What It's All About! I have always wanted to share my experiences through photographs. Photographers can work a lifetime and never really know to what extent viewers connect with their personal vision. Take a minute and read this email I recently received from Kara, a visitor to my studio in The Torpedo Factory Art Center in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia . I'm sincerely touched. Craig J. Sterling. Craig's thoughts on photography. Wednesday, February 25, 2015. Michael Kenna - Black and White vs Color Photography. Why Black and White? Having my studio at The Torpedo Factory Art Center in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia for the past 14 years has provided a unique public venue for my work. One of the questions I am frequently asked is "why black and white and not color? As most people know, I only work in black and white and have never been interested in working in color . but why? Craig's thoughts on photography. Friday, December 20, 2013. Video of Craig Sterling - "Photographing the Familiar in an Unfamiliar Way". After seeing my photographs, many individuals exclaim, "I've seen that before, but never quite like that." What better way is there to describe the imagery that I have created of noted landmarks here in Washington, D.C. and around the world? This short video by talented filmmaker and photographer Dean Pagani. Craig J. Sterling. The Torpedo Factory Art Center.

Jim's Random Thoughts: Beauty

http://jamesdsteele.blogspot.com/2014/08/beauty.html

Friday, August 8, 2014. I have recently started shooting flowers in the process of "passing into another state." What I have come to realize is that they are possibly more beautiful than they were when they were "fresh.". Trust me, boring is worse. In showing the flower pictures, I am struck by how many folks comment that they didn't realize that dieing flowers could be so beautiful. Maybe this is a result of seeing them large where small details are made visible. Who knows? Maybe I'm just out of touch.

Jim's Random Thoughts: August 2013

http://jamesdsteele.blogspot.com/2013_08_01_archive.html

Saturday, August 31, 2013. The Virtues of Ambiguity. Some images are too easy. Once you have seen them you have discovered all there is to see. This may be OK in that the image brings you joy every time you look at it. However, I have discovered that I like images that I don't quite understand. Every time I look at them they present an opportunity for reinterpretation. They are not always pretty. And " Pepper #30. No two images could be simpler, yet for me, they are images that hold infinite fascination.

Jim's Random Thoughts: August 2014

http://jamesdsteele.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html

Saturday, August 16, 2014. As I indicated in my previous entry, I have recently come to realize that flowers that are not freshly cut and in full bloom are entering a more visually interesting phase. To make a long story short, I have made about 300 photographs of flowers in various states of transition. Nothing exceeds like excess! No flower in the neighborhood is safe. Folks are leaving flowers for me in my mailbox at the Factory and in sacks attached to the door of my studio. Links to this post. In sh...

Jim's Random Thoughts: March 2014

http://jamesdsteele.blogspot.com/2014_03_01_archive.html

Saturday, March 15, 2014. Miles Davis and the Art of Photography. I recently read a statement attributed to Miles Davis (possibly the greatest jazz trumpet player of all times - but that's for another time), that he played not what was there, but what was not there. Visual literacy is difficult to teach and probably takes years to acquire. We are very good at teaching people how. To change an image but not very good at teaching them why. Links to this post. Jim's Random Thoughts: February 2015

http://jamesdsteele.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html

Sunday, February 8, 2015. There is a famous quote by Chuck Close to the effect that photography is the only media in which you can create an accidental masterpiece. Not that the above image is a masterpiece, but it happened because of a happy accident. I was adjusting the level in Photoshop and accidentally moved the adjustment too far. All of a sudden, the veins were enhanced and the luminosity was improved. I had had no idea the image contained so much unrevealed detail. Links to this post.

Jim's Random Thoughts: March 2013

http://jamesdsteele.blogspot.com/2013_03_01_archive.html

Sunday, March 24, 2013. The Photograph vs The Painting. Snag, Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge. While I claim to be no expert on the state of painting in the world today, I have sort of come to the conclusion that most painters don't paint what a lot of photographers photograph. The epiphany came to me while I was looking at one of my favorite websites, americansuburbx. I wonder why this is? Are photographers more likely to explore the world around them? One thing I know for certain, you cannot be afr...

Jim's Random Thoughts: September 2013

http://jamesdsteele.blogspot.com/2013_09_01_archive.html

Saturday, September 7, 2013. The above image was taken years ago in Lermoos, Austria. It's an image that works well in a small size, maybe 8"x8" at the largest, but totally falls apart larger. I have long had the theory that images seek their own size. Some work well at a variety of sizes but most have an ideal size at which they work best. I recently came across a wonderful article by photographer David Kachel. Called "Ban the Bedsheets-Size Matters". Just some food for thought. Links to this post.

Jim's Random Thoughts: Too Easy

http://jamesdsteele.blogspot.com/2015/04/too-easy.html

Friday, April 10, 2015. This morning I was thinking about what makes a photograph interesting to me. My conclusion was that I liked photographs that can be reinterpreted every time I look at them. They always seem to offer something new to be discovered. The above image has, at least for me, those characteristics. Every time I look at this image I create a different narrative of the circumstances surrounding it. September 28, 2015 at 10:52 AM. Http:/ www.aceofbeauty.com fat loss sexy.

Jim's Random Thoughts: February 2013

http://jamesdsteele.blogspot.com/2013_02_01_archive.html

Thursday, February 21, 2013. My first fine printing class was with George Tice. At what today is called the Maine Media Workshops. It also tells me that dealers have been successful in convincing collectors that early prints are more valuable than later prints, in spite of how we, as photographers, feel about our work. Links to this post. Friday, February 15, 2013. Links to this post. Friday, February 1, 2013. On the grounds of the Virgina Museum of Fine Art is the Confederate Memorial Church. As I w...
