Jim's Random Thoughts

Friday, May 5, 2017. I have been taking pictures of flowers that are past prime. It’s easy to say that this is a reflection on my own life, but that is too easy. I am struck by how interesting they become. Some retain their color and form. Some change form and some change color. Most become more interesting. Certainly scale has something to do with it. Seeing them on such a large scale makes it easier to see the details and colors. I recently returned from a trip to Death Valley. Links to this post.

Jim's Random Thoughts: September 2013

http://jamesdsteele.blogspot.com/2013_09_01_archive.html

Saturday, September 7, 2013. The above image was taken years ago in Lermoos, Austria. It's an image that works well in a small size, maybe 8"x8" at the largest, but totally falls apart larger. I have long had the theory that images seek their own size. Some work well at a variety of sizes but most have an ideal size at which they work best. I recently came across a wonderful article by photographer David Kachel. Called "Ban the Bedsheets-Size Matters". Just some food for thought. Links to this post.

Jim's Random Thoughts: Too Easy

http://jamesdsteele.blogspot.com/2015/04/too-easy.html

Friday, April 10, 2015. This morning I was thinking about what makes a photograph interesting to me. My conclusion was that I liked photographs that can be reinterpreted every time I look at them. They always seem to offer something new to be discovered. The above image has, at least for me, those characteristics. Every time I look at this image I create a different narrative of the circumstances surrounding it. September 28, 2015 at 10:52 AM. Http:/ www.aceofbeauty.com fat loss sexy.

Jim's Random Thoughts: February 2013

Thursday, February 21, 2013. My first fine printing class was with George Tice. At what today is called the Maine Media Workshops. It also tells me that dealers have been successful in convincing collectors that early prints are more valuable than later prints, in spite of how we, as photographers, feel about our work. Jim's Random Thoughts: June 2013

http://jamesdsteele.blogspot.com/2013_06_01_archive.html

Saturday, June 1, 2013. Visual Literacy and Photographic Education. Ansel Adams had it partially right when he describe the process of "pre-visualization." Ansel posited that we should pre-visualize the image because that would lead to technical decisions regarding exposure of the film and development of the negative. It was sort of a backward process whereby we are supposed to understand where we were going so that we can implement a workflow that will get us there. Links to this post. Visual Literacy a...

Beyond the F-Stop: Michael Kenna - Black & White vs Color Photography

http://beyondthefstop.blogspot.com/2015/02/michael-kenna-black-white-vs-color.html

Craig's thoughts on photography. Wednesday, February 25, 2015. Michael Kenna - Black and White vs Color Photography. Why Black and White? Having my studio at The Torpedo Factory Art Center in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia for the past 14 years has provided a unique public venue for my work. One of the questions I am frequently asked is "why black and white and not color? As most people know, I only work in black and white and have never been interested in working in color . but why? Beyond the F-Stop: An Art Survey

http://beyondthefstop.blogspot.com/2013/07/an-art-survey.html

Craig's thoughts on photography. Friday, July 5, 2013. Jay Leno, Bill Mahr and CNN have all at one time or another conducted surveys out in the street of typical Americans. They ask to name the Secretary of State, Vice President or the Governor of their home state. Much to my amazement, the vast majority of people surveyed don't have a clue . AMAZING! What does this say about the public's knowledge of art? Do we only care about the Kim Kardashian, Beyonce and Duck Dynasty . I guess so!

http://beyondthefstop.blogspot.com/2014_07_01_archive.html

Craig's thoughts on photography. Thursday, July 10, 2014. What It's All About! I have always wanted to share my experiences through photographs. Photographers can work a lifetime and never really know to what extent viewers connect with their personal vision. Take a minute and read this email I recently received from Kara, a visitor to my studio in The Torpedo Factory Art Center in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia . I'm sincerely touched. Craig J. Sterling. Beyond the F-Stop: April 2012

http://beyondthefstop.blogspot.com/2012_04_01_archive.html

Craig's thoughts on photography. Friday, April 6, 2012. Ooops, Mr. Eggleston! Recently I wrote about the March 12th auction of William Eggleston's prints at Christie's in New York City and how important I thought the sale was to the validation of digital pigment prints. Eggleston's 1973 image of a child's tricycle sold for $578,500 . a whopping price for a digital pigment print. So, what is this all about? James and Kathryn Steele Photography. Scapes-Land, Body, and Floral. N Va Academy of Clinical Psychologists Quarterly Journal Spring, 2009. Pete Bloom, Ph.D. Though assisting our parents has often been extremely stressful, with new challenges arising regularly, when I slow down and remind myself to look closely, with my eyes and my heart, I see and feel their beauty. Although it may have been my imagination, I believe his toes were dancing to the music. He loved to dance. 105 N Union Street.
