Each year, over 100 children, age infant to 14, are brought to Watson Children’s Shelter because. They have been abused, neglected, abandoned or their family is in crisis. Most are brought to the shelter by the police or social workers. The children stay, on average, 60-90 days, though some children remain longer until their family crisis is resolved or suitable long-term options can be arranged. The development of bones and muscles would never support her body weight as they were, so on the day after her first birthday, her legs were amputated to allow the use of prosthetic legs.
