Birding Trip to Iceland

Birding Trip to Iceland. Personal account of a trip to Iceland. Friday, July 30, 2010. 7-30-10 U.S. air force personnel were transferring through the Flug Hotel in Keflavik. It was good to see guys in uniform defending the country. In that hotel I tried to use the internet to update the blog, but the webpage gave an error message saying that I did not have permission. Taken from inside our plane as the sun went down. Taken inside the plane when the lights went out. Glad to be back. Posted by the Author.

Birding Trip to Iceland: Flatey

http://www.birding123.blogspot.com/2010/07/flatey.html

Birding Trip to Iceland. Personal account of a trip to Iceland. Monday, July 19, 2010. 7-19-10 This was a great day. We got up at 4am and scoped the tidal flats near our hotel. I cooked a waffle for Berry, at one of those breakfast bars where you serve yourself. Then we got on the "Ferry to Flatey". Flatey is an island next to the west coast of Iceland, on which breed Red Phalaropes (Phalaropus fulicarius ). The statistics were against us. What if the phalaropes had migrated early? What if we missed them?

Birding Trip to Iceland: Where is the moon ?

Birding Trip to Iceland. Personal account of a trip to Iceland. Saturday, July 17, 2010. Where is the moon? 7-17-10 The Icelanders say that in summer the sun just bounces off the sea and rises again in the sky. We visited a cool ocean inlet south of Reykjavik, where we saw Eider ducks (Somateria mollissima). And a Whooper Swan (Cygnus cygnus). We drove down a little country road and saw some Icelandic horses. There were also two Redpolls (Carduelis flammea). On a wire and several Dunlins (Calidris alpina).

Birding Trip to Iceland: Goodbye to Reykjavik

http://www.birding123.blogspot.com/2010/07/goodbye-to-reykjavik.html

Birding Trip to Iceland. Personal account of a trip to Iceland. Saturday, July 17, 2010. 7-17-10 Reykjavík is the capital and largest city of Iceland. The name means "an inlet with smoke" or "Smoky Bay", although it was not smoke the original settlers saw. It was steam. Today we went to the lighthouse. Robert saw Puffins flying south, but I did not see them. There were huge mats of seaweed on the beach. And there were lots of Arctic Terns nesting in the grass. This is a picture that Rober...Parts of a Bi...

Painted Bunting Bird Club: Birding the Delta National Forest

http://paintedbuntingbirdclub.blogspot.com/2014/12/birding-delta-national-forest.html

Painted Bunting Bird Club. Saturday, December 27, 2014. Birding the Delta National Forest. The sky looked threatening all day long, but it did not rain heavily while we were actually birding in the forest. Because of the sprinkles we birded mostly from the car. Berry stared at some branches on her side of the car. She quietly whispered to me the word, "tow-hee" and gestured to her right. There was a delightful white-eyed Eastern Towhee staring back at me. Some other birds we saw today were :. According t...

Painted Bunting Bird Club. Sunday, April 27, 2014. Berry and I went to the Shelby Farms Park in Memphis. This large city park has open grasslands and stands of hardwood trees. There is a plot of bamboo which provides food for the pandas at the zoo. In the hardwood and pine trees, next to its agricultural experimentation plots, we saw the bird of the day. The Blue Grosbeak. Painted Bunting Bird Club. Wednesday, June 24, 2015. I followed my wife to Orlando, Florida. She has a business meeting and I could stay in the hotel with her. This is a large convention hotel with hundreds of rooms, several swimming pools and a golf course attached to it. In the weeds in the pond next to the cart path, there was a Limpkin (Aramus guarauna). This one had avoided being eaten by an alligator. Also, during this walk around the convention center, we saw four Sandhill Cranes.

Painted Bunting Bird Club: A Peninsula into the Gulf of Mexico

http://paintedbuntingbirdclub.blogspot.com/2014/12/a-peninsula-into-gulf-of-mexico.html

Painted Bunting Bird Club. Monday, December 29, 2014. A Peninsula into the Gulf of Mexico. And the Cape Sable Seaside Sparrow. This was a great day. The peninsula had a great many orange trees. We were surprised, frankly, that many of the actual oranges were still on the trees this late in the year. About half way down the peninsula, there was the ancient Fort Jackson. It was a battle site in the American Civil War. We drove around the property slowly and looked at birds. Robert drove very slowly down th...

Painted Bunting Bird Club. Saturday, March 22, 2014. An Owl in the Backyard. Because I heard it hooting. What was I doing up at 3:45am, you are wondering. I was aroused from deep sleep by a sinus congestion. I was standing there in my kitchen, quietly pickling vegetables, when the owl hooted in my backyard. Posted by the Author. Painted Bunting Bird Club. Saturday, May 2, 2015. A Beautiful Day in May. We birded the Riverport area in Memphis, Tennessee. At the bridge over the Nonconnah River, we saw a flock of Cliff Swallows (Petrochelidon pyrrhonota). Swarming from nests under the bridge. In the water of the river, we saw turtles swimming to the left and several gars, a type a fish, swimming to the right. We saw Eastern Kingbirds (Tyrannus tyrannus).
