Sunday, May 3, 2015. Birding on Broadmeade Walk. Here's a photo of two of them:. Nearby we watched male and female Downy Woodpeckers going in and out of a nesting cavity. A little further down the trail some of us got looks at a Least Flycatcher, one of the few actual migrating songbirds we saw. Shortly afterwards we were treated to a migrating Mississippi Kite flying over. It circled over us a few times before heading north and I got this poor photo of that very graceful hawk:. Thursday, February 5, 2015. Birding on Broadmeade Walk. On our way back from the footbridge someone pointed out the opaque berries of Chinaberry tree on the trail and remarked that berries from the exotic Chinaberry tree are opaque, but similar berries from the native Soapberry tree are partially translucent. Sunday, April 5, 2015. Birding on Broadmeade Walk. Despite it being Easter Sunday and despite imminent rain, nine folks joined me this morning for the monthly group bird walk. We started at the Braes Valley parking lot and spent two hours finding about 40 species of birds. The overcast cool damp weather seemed to subdue the birds and make them harder than usual to observe. Sunday, April 19, 2015. Only one was visible when I pointed my camera at them, and here are my photos:. The nestling was panting, with its tongue stuck out. If this bird thinks it's hot now, he or she is in for a long summer! Dragonflies are also coming back! I was happy to see several newly returned Common Green Darners foraging in the air. Sunday, January 25, 2015. Last weekend I spent Sunday morning birding Lake Creek Trail. I ran into Barry Noret and we had a banner morning totaling 61 species of birds! This is the American Wigeon's counterpart in the other hemisphere. They show up occasionally on the east and west coasts of the Americas, but they show up in Texas much less often. I got this distant photo, and we decided to refrain from getting closer and risk scaring the bird away. Here are a few more photos from this banner morning:.

Not always fun, but plenty of sun. Friday, December 2, 2011. After reading the letter we relaxed, figuring they would be doing most of the work inside the existing structure. Soon after the letter arrived a porta potty was set up. The very next day a side deck was wrenched off and hauled away. An iron gate and vintage looking light fixture all disappeared at some point in the process. Surely to be re-used, we thought but then. That means the locals have had plenty of time to gawk close up at the new view.

Monday, March 5, 2018. Birding on Broadmeade Walk. We made our way upstream to the last dam on the creek, and while we were there two Crested Caracaras flew by. This is a dramatically patterned member of the falcon family that is extending its range north in Texas and is an uncommon bird for Lake Creek Trail.
