BoneZone Oddblog: February 2013

http://bonezoneblog.blogspot.com/2013_02_01_archive.html

Odd thoughts from my little niche as a trombone teacher at the University of South Carolina. Thursday, February 28, 2013. Buddy the Elf (and articulation). When I'm working with my students on articulation, I always like to conjure images of movement. Here's one: "Think of the note being propelled out of the bell on the air stream.". Of course, the next step was to play a sequence of notes, each with that same great attack. How about Buddy the Elf (from the Christmas movie, Elf). View my complete profile.

BoneZone Oddblog: October 2014

http://bonezoneblog.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html

Odd thoughts from my little niche as a trombone teacher at the University of South Carolina. Tuesday, October 21, 2014. Duel of the Habits / Growing a Mighty Oak. As we learn, we build habits. Some help us play better. When we try to learn a new habit (ie "Break an Old Habit"), there is, essentially a battle going on in our minds. The new habit (an alternate position or keeping the throat relaxed) is like a young plant that needs constant nourishment and love. Sunday, October 05, 2014. That's like the ol...

BoneZone Oddblog: There are no Pass-Offs

http://bonezoneblog.blogspot.com/2013/10/there-are-no-pass-offs.html

Odd thoughts from my little niche as a trombone teacher at the University of South Carolina. Tuesday, October 08, 2013. There are no Pass-Offs. Many of my students use the term "pass off" in lessons. For example, "I want to pass off that etude this week.". In music, there are no pass-offs! In football, does a field goal kicker stop after one successful kick, announcing to the coach, "OK coach, I've passed off my field goals! But Mr. Jacobs, I passed that off last time.". There are no finish lines? The In...

BoneZone Oddblog: Sight-Reading Lucy

http://bonezoneblog.blogspot.com/2013/11/sight-reading-lucy.html

Odd thoughts from my little niche as a trombone teacher at the University of South Carolina. Monday, November 25, 2013. When sight-reading, I always stress to my students: don't stop and restart! It's as if you are playing with an invisible band. They won't stop for you so you must learn to keep the beat going. If you stumble, pick things back up as if the beat never stopped (which it doesn't! The belt never stops.keep going! شركة تنظيف خزانات بالدمام. شركة تنظيف خزانات بالخبر. شركة تنظيف خزانات بالجبيل.

The View from the Back Row: October 2009

http://viewfrombackrow.blogspot.com/2009_10_01_archive.html

Bill Watrous on Samantha. I know Jon usually posts the YouTube of the Week, but he's informed me that his posting might be sporadic for a while, so I've decided to step in where I can to keep things regular around here. I was inspired to look up Bill Watrous on YouTube by my friend Joe, who recently saw him play live in Houston. I came across this recording of Watrous playing "Samantha", a beautiful ballad, and the video (while grainy) gives some amazing shots of his use of slide vibrato. Enjoy! It's dif...

On recordings. again. I'm sitting here waiting for my car to be repaired, managed to steal a WiFi signal, and so I thought - what better time to update the blog? I mentioned last time. I was personally disappointed in my own performance in our recording of this piece, and I think most of the band wishes we could have a collective mulligan. Links to this post. a midwestern tale: February 2010

http://amidwesterntale.blogspot.com/2010_02_01_archive.html

I moved to iowa for the corn. Wednesday, February 17, 2010. A Little Bit of Iowa City. Here are some pictures that I took over the past few days on my way to and from class. This is the hospital parking garage near my house. Note how the snow is piled up to the second level! I finally dug my car out of the snow! On my way to class- you can see the Pentacrest building in the background. Walking back from teaching my class. The buildings in the background are across the river. Frozen river under the bridge!

a midwestern tale: Colonial Lanes

http://amidwesterntale.blogspot.com/2011/03/colonial-lanes.html

I moved to iowa for the corn. Friday, March 18, 2011. I went bowling with Rachel, Ryan, and Matt a few weeks ago. We used 30 Rock names- I was Lemon, Rachel was Maroney, Ryan was Dot Com, and Matt was Grizz. I may in fact be the world's worst bowler. My all-time low score was in 4th grade with a 26. I bowled a 25 on our third game that night. How sad. It was fun, though! Pizza at the Wedge before bowling. My strategy was to run and hurl the bowling ball. It didn't quite work out for me.

I moved to iowa for the corn. Sunday, October 24, 2010. Last weekend Rachel and I carved pumpkins and had a autumn extravaganza in our apartment! Rachel baking Halloweeny cookies! Honey Crisp Apple Cider and delicious cookies. Me with our spider Rupert. Goodies my mom sent. Post carving: Rachel's Jack the Pumpkin King and my owl on a tree. Links to this post. a midwestern tale: Thanksgiving 2010

http://amidwesterntale.blogspot.com/2010/11/thanksgiving-2010.html

I moved to iowa for the corn. Monday, November 29, 2010. I had a wonderful time over Thanksgiving break! It was great to visit with my family and friends, and we ate so much good food! Apple Cranberry dish (Lauren's favorite) with the fancy punch I made. Pop enjoying his punch and watching football before lunch. So Many. Dishes. Mom always decorates the table so nicely! 20 lb turkey- half was baked and half was grilled, both were delicious (says the "vegetarian"). The dinner crew and food.

I moved to iowa for the corn. Tuesday, February 15, 2011. The snow piled up about a foot over our side door. Rachel trying to climb back in. Good thing she was wearing warm pajamas :). The snow covered our covered porch and eliminated our front steps. After our neighbors and us shoveled the driveway for a few hours. Our cars were packed in good. You wouldn't know this by looking, but there is an entire car buried in snow on the left. I hope no one is in the car. I shoveled the sidewalk! Links to this post.

The View from the Back Row: on recordings

http://viewfrombackrow.blogspot.com/2010/05/on-recordings.html

Personally, I have been part of a number of scheduled recordings like this. The Symphonic Band at the RLMU was part of a number of recordings of new band music for sampler CDs for band directors. Most notably, however, I was in the band that recorded Jim Bonney's. Which appears on BCM's Men of Industry. CD It's a great piece of music, truly, and the recording experience was intense (and Jim Bonney is an amazingly inspirational person). Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Sounds like a bad shoujo-ai.".

The View from the Back Row: Glossary

http://viewfrombackrow.blogspot.com/2009/09/glossary.html

So because we don't always take time to explain ourselves, here's a little glossary of some terms used in this blog that might not be intuitive. We will be updating this as necessary. Japanese animated television shows or films, usually created for an adult audience rather than American-style "cartoons". The "Award-Winning Community Band" that Jon and Lauren share a stand in. This is a code name. The actual band is the East Winds Symphonic Band. Hamsters in the mugs. A concert or a performance of any type.

The View from the Back Row: March 2010

http://viewfrombackrow.blogspot.com/2010_03_01_archive.html

I found this interesting video from composer Steven Bryant on YouTube. It's the first of a series about his compositional methods in creating his latest work, Concerto for Wind Ensemble. Do they have a melody in mind and try to build it in to these time signatures? It looks like Steven Bryant, at least, approaches it much differently. There's so much in this video - what did you find interesting? Links to this post. Allow me to rant for just a moment about clarity. A hyponym would be poodle. All Pepsis a...
