Day 5 – Thukla – Everest Base Camp, Nepal 2011
http://everest.industrialnation.co.uk/thukla
Everest Base Camp, Nepal 2011. Day 5 – Thukla. My willingness to write in my notebook seems to have taken a nosedive here, with big blank spaces where my notes should be. I also start getting a bit tardy with taking photos – some of the photos around this point are courtesy of Sonja, one of our team. I vaguely remember doing lots of walking and feeling crap attributed to AMS. Met (Tashi, I think) Tshering Sherpa from Into Thin Air. Of Scott Fischer’s Mountain Madness. So, inbetween summits to Everest, Mr...

Clothes – Everest Base Camp, Nepal 2011
http://everest.industrialnation.co.uk/clothes-2
Everest Base Camp, Nepal 2011. Not being an outdoorsy type, I didn’t have much in the way of ‘extreme’ clothing, so there was a full wardrobe to buy, with little idea of what exactly, was needed. Having read a few books and online articles, it seems like the most important thing to keep in mind is to dress in layers – lots of thin, breathable layers you can peel off and slip back on as required. Wikipedia has quite a good article on layered clothing. It did occur to me to just take my snowboard jacket, b...

Travel Visa – Everest Base Camp, Nepal 2011
http://everest.industrialnation.co.uk/travel-visa
Everest Base Camp, Nepal 2011. One good thing about keeping this sort of ‘diary’ is that it’s a very handy place to keep track of my notes, and what I’ve done and still need to do. Getting my travel visa to get into Nepal in the first place seems to be a bit of a fiddly affair, needing a whole checklist to itself. The Adventure Co. tells me I need the following:. Acquire visa on arrival. 40 (USD) for 30 days. 6 months validity on my passport. Day 0 – Kathmandu. Day 1 – Lukla to Phakding. The End ….

Day 2 – Namche Bazaar – Everest Base Camp, Nepal 2011
http://everest.industrialnation.co.uk/namche-bazaar
Everest Base Camp, Nepal 2011. Day 2 – Namche Bazaar. 3440m) is the last large town before you hit the mountains. The main shopping touristy area is made up of maybe two or three streets with shops and lodges selling everything a trekker might need. Along with the usual food and souvenir stalls, these were also quite a few mountain hardware and clothing stores. I asked Hari how far it was to walk from Lukla to Baecamp. I think he said it was about 120km. Day 3 Khunde and Syangboche. Day 5 – Thukla. Proud...

Day 7 – Kala Patthar – Everest Base Camp, Nepal 2011
http://everest.industrialnation.co.uk/kala-patthar
Everest Base Camp, Nepal 2011. Day 7 – Kala Patthar. Woke up at 4am to leave at 4:30am to walk up Kala Patthar to see sunrise. There was a lot of faffing about and Anil motioned for me to follow him – I guess he was getting a tad impatient. The others would follow with Ashori in a short while. I was beyond shattered. Not so tired as simply exhausted – I remember sitting there for a long, long time, staring into space. Had breakfast and headed down to Tengboche, I think …? Day 8 Return Journey.

Everest Base Camp, Nepal 2011. Day 3 – Khunde and Syangboche. Woke up early to walk through conservation area up to Syangboche. 3,841m) and back down to acclimatise. Get out the way! We pretty much spent half the day hanging around in Namche once we got back. Sarah wandered off to an internet cafe while the other guys went off to their rooms to do coupley stuff (I guess). Day 0 – Kathmandu. Day 1 – Lukla to Phakding. Day 2 – Namche Bazaar. Day 3 – Khunde and Syangboche. Day 4 – Pangboche. The End ….

Day 0 – Kathmandu – Everest Base Camp, Nepal 2011
http://everest.industrialnation.co.uk/kathmandu
Everest Base Camp, Nepal 2011. Day 0 – Kathmandu. 11th November 17th November. Preface: Due to inclement weather over in Lukla, our flight was delayed by 4 days, most of which we spent in Boudhanath (temple area), people watching. Friday 11th -Saturday 12th November. Having packed all my gear, I enthusiastically trekked to London Heathrow looking every bit like a tourist. At customs I nearly lost my moneybelt and all my money when it failed to emerge from the baggage scanner! Was an interesting experienc...

Day 1 – Lukla to Phakding – Everest Base Camp, Nepal 2011
http://everest.industrialnation.co.uk/lukla-phakding
Everest Base Camp, Nepal 2011. Day 1 – Lukla to Phakding. Went to airport for 7 – we’re actually flying! We get to go to Everest! Got a flight around 10 in a Twin Otter small plane for about 20 people. We still had a stewardess though, and she gave us cotton wool to stuff into our ears for the noise. The plane was so small that the pilots didn’t bother to close the door to the cockpit – one of them was reading a newspaper as we flew across the mountains. Most dangerous runway in the world. Day 0 – ...

Day 8+ – Return Journey – Everest Base Camp, Nepal 2011
http://everest.industrialnation.co.uk/return-journey
Everest Base Camp, Nepal 2011. Day 8 – Return Journey. Unfortunately, I remember very little of the final few days, other than my knee blowing out from all the giant steps we were walking down. Alex gave me a tubigrip bandage to use, Sonja gave me some Deep Heat and Zoe lent me one of her trekking poles … thanks guys! I’m not sure I would’ve made it down the mountain without all that …. Toiletries – Everest Base Camp, Nepal 2011
http://everest.industrialnation.co.uk/toiletries
Everest Base Camp, Nepal 2011. A lot of the stuff I chose to take on recommendation from books and other sources (as well Adventure Co’s website). Clockwise, from top left:. Wet wipes (amazing for when there’s no hot water to shower). Supplementary water bottle (approx 700ml). Toiletries bag (keeps all your shit together). Toilet roll (with tube removed). Electrolyte water supplement tablets. Glasses and contact lens stuff. And some heat rub ointment. Cold when left overnight to clean/soak. They neve...
