Kinabalu – Kinabalu, Borneo 2014
http://borneo.industrialnation.co.uk/kinabalu
Kinabalu, Borneo 2014. Amazingmalaysiaa.blogspot.co.uk. Will be on the agenda on the fourth day of our trek. At 4095m, I don’t think I’ll need Diamox – I’ve been higher with few altitude worries. The only minor annoyance is I’ll be having to pack extra cold weather clothing especially for this portion of the trip. I think trekking poles will be a must for this, for me. There’re lots of videos of Kinabalu:. Climbing Mt Kinabalu: Part 1. Everest Base Camp 2011. Mosquito Repellents and Anti-Malarials.

Kinabalu, Borneo 2014. Day 6 – Poring Hot Springs. After breakfast, we spent some time exploring Poring. Besides the hot springs, there were plenty of other things to go see and do. First up, was a walk up the trees! For a few ringgit, you could walk up (many) steps and across bridges up in the trees. Afterwards, Donny gave us the option of going to see a nearby waterfall with the little fish which nibble at your feet. They went anyway. The rest of us went to see the kiddies waterfall. We drove out to wh...

Day 8 – Sandakan – Kinabalu, Borneo 2014
http://borneo.industrialnation.co.uk/day-9-sandakan
Kinabalu, Borneo 2014. Day 8 – Sandakan. I think we saw a few more macaques, some snakes and a few different types of bird, before we returned to the lodge to pack up for a 5 hour drive to Sandakan (we even got a decent coach today! Midway through our journey, we made a toilet stop at a most random location where there seem to be nothing but a pile of shops which all seemed to sell the same things. Donny informed us that there is sometimes a market here, pointing out the empty stalls. Day 2/3 – Tag...

Kinabalu, Borneo 2014. Day 5 – Descent and Poring. I think maybe Dave and Officer Andrew managed to sleep – everyone else managed snatches, and Jackie didn’t sleep at all. Regardless, we were all up by 2:00 and raring to go in half an hour. A hundred people were all setting off to the summit about this time, and it took a while to clear the congestion. The sky was dark and the air was clear. Head torches were flashing everywhere as everyone got used to walking up the steep wooden steps in the dark. Every...

Vaccinations – Kinabalu, Borneo 2014
http://borneo.industrialnation.co.uk/vaccinations
Kinabalu, Borneo 2014. Hopefully, by point I’ll have been on enough trips I won’t have to worry about getting anymore vaccinations. Going by my handy Nomad. Vaccination card, it looks like I could be due a typhoid and rabies booster. I’ve never had anything for cholera though, but I’ll see what they say. Everest Base Camp 2011. Kinabalu, Borneo 2014. As always, I’ve booked with the Adventure Company. This time I’ll be going with Jackie who I trekked with, up Mount Kilimanjaro and as we’ve both had good previous experiences with the AdCo. we saw no reason not to go with them again. The Adventure Company: adventurecompany.co.uk. Sabah Adventure: adventurecompany.co.uk/tours/sabah-adventure. Twitter: twitter.com/Adventure Co. Since we initially booked our trip, Adventure Company had merged. This didn’t affect our trip.

Kinabalu, Borneo 2014. Day 4 – Mount Kinabalu. 6:30 was the time to wake up today; to pack the stuff we’d need for the journey up/down, and overnight stay at the hostel, go for breakfast and set off at 8:30. The sandwiches were pretty horrible-looking and a few in the group elected to leave them behind. Some of us were having problems packing everything we needed into our bags, and Fred gave me his bottle of water and apple. By 11 o’ clock we’d reached 2634m and stopped for lunch. As we were climbing, we...

Day 7 – Kinabatangan – Kinabalu, Borneo 2014
http://borneo.industrialnation.co.uk/day-8-kinabatangan-jungle-camp
Kinabalu, Borneo 2014. Day 7 – Kinabatangan. Today, we’d be leaving Poring, and heading to the jungle camp in Kinabatangan in Sandakan. Most of today would be taken up with the 5-6 hour drive to Sandakan which was quite hard going – our minibus didn’t have headrests, so no sleep would be forthcoming. After a long ride, we swapped our minibus for speedboats! We crossed the Kinabatangan River. Sighting. Sue later found a leech on her when she went for a shower, despite all of us wearing leech socks.
