Snapping photos with an iPhone in the back of a jostling truck is not an easy task, but these views are absolutely worth sharing! I wished I could open my eyes wider to drink in more of the landscape around us. Thirteen Americans, a Guatemalan, and thirteen backpacks in the back of an ’84 Toyota pickup–and it was one of the best parts of the trip yet. Vertical dirt is still a great place to grow. Six months somewhere near Quetzaltenango, Guatemala. Snapshots of the mountainous countryside heading out of Xela. The air was chilly and mist was settling into the valley as we left. Just an hour away, things changed…. 8230;and we were in the lowlands! Fields and fields and fields. And people selling things at roadside stands. After nearly 7 hours of driving, we were there! Pool outside our rooms. Going out into the lagoon. Inside a little inlet. Mangroves reaching into the water. My prize photo 🙂.

February 14, 2013. On Tuesday I celebrated Mardi Gras (or Fat Tuesday) in a typical Czech fashion at my town’s ‘Masopust’ festival. Masopust at the City Hall. Masopust basically means “meat celebration.” Just like Mardi Gras, people will spend the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday stuffing their face with meat and fatty food as a last-ditch effort to consume unhealthy things before fasting for the Lenten season. 8220;Do you want some weird meat stuff? Yup I ate it. Thanks to this kid, I had 3 shots by 3:30pm.
