CABINET OF CURIOSITIES: Swallow-tail Moth

http://cabinetofcuriosities-greenfingers.blogspot.com/2011/06/swallow-tail-moth.html

Some natural wonders from North East England. Monday, June 6, 2011. The beautifully camouflaged caterpillar whose picture I posted here. Duly pupated and last night this exquisite swallow-tail moth. With this lighting the fine brown lines on the wings show nicely and if you double-click on the image to enlarge it you can pick out the bright red spot just behind the tip of each of its 'swallowtails'. June 6, 2011 at 7:25 PM. Ah, so theres a Swallowtail moth for me to not find, too :o). Gorgeous pics, Phil.

CABINET OF CURIOSITIES: A Tree-spotter's guide to Buds: part 3

http://cabinetofcuriosities-greenfingers.blogspot.com/2009/12/tree-spotters-guide-to-buds-part-3.html

Some natural wonders from North East England. Tuesday, December 8, 2009. A Tree-spotter's guide to Buds: part 3. Still bearing the fruit of last spring's blossom, this blackthorn. Twig with its tight little clusters of buds will be clothed in a froth of white flowers in a little over three months from now. Blackthorn flower buds are carried on short woody spurs. The attractive buds of bird cherry. Glossy, purple-brown and pointed. A hedgerow tree that's commonest in the northern half of Britain. But a se...

CABINET OF CURIOSITIES: Marsh violet

http://cabinetofcuriosities-greenfingers.blogspot.com/2015/05/marsh-violet.html

Some natural wonders from North East England. Wednesday, May 20, 2015. If we hadn't been caught in a heavy rain shower that forced us to shelter under a tree in Hamsterley forest yesterday morning, I probably wouldn't have noticed these delightful little marsh violets growing in a ditch. A closer look revealed several large patches of them, which is good news because they are the food plant of the caterpillar of the small pearl-bordered fritillary, a rare butterfly in County Durham. CABINET OF CURIOSITIES: The Sex Life of Brown Seaweeds

http://cabinetofcuriosities-greenfingers.blogspot.com/2015/05/the-sex-life-of-brown-seaweeds.html

Some natural wonders from North East England. Friday, May 15, 2015. The Sex Life of Brown Seaweeds. The arrival of spring brings a sudden burst of reproductive growth on the seashore intertidal zone, just as it does in woodlands. The big difference is that on the seashore it's algae - seaweeds - that are switching into reproductive mode, not flowering plants like bluebells. The picture above shows chanelled wrack Pelvetia canaliculata. On the shore at Low Newton on the Northumberland coast and . This is ...

Beyond the Human Eye: Scale insects ....

http://beyondthehumaneye.blogspot.com/2013/01/scale-insects.html

Beyond the Human Eye. An insight into a microscopic world, invisible to the unaided human eye. Sunday, January 6, 2013. I recently discovered that the orchid on my desk is infested with these tiny scale insects Coccus hesperidium. Each one looks like a miniature tortoise, about 3-4mm. long and tightly attached to leaves. The tell-tale symptom was the sticky secretion on my desk under the leaves - scale insects suck sap, like aphids, and excrete honeydew. Here's an older individual, where you can see the ...

Beyond the Human Eye: Orchid Roots: Botanical Sponges

http://beyondthehumaneye.blogspot.com/2010/05/orchid-roots-botanical-sponges.html

Beyond the Human Eye. An insight into a microscopic world, invisible to the unaided human eye. Thursday, May 6, 2010. Orchid Roots: Botanical Sponges. You can crudely divide orchids into two groups: ground orchids, rooted in the soil - like. For example - and epiphytic orchids. And their role is to soak up water as the roots dangle in the air, high above the forest floor. They are, in effect, a sponge. The recommended way to water tropical orchids, like. With their roots dangling in space. May 11, 2010 a...

THE WESSEX REIVER: Flying Ant Day

http://wessexreiver.blogspot.com/2015/08/flying-ant-day.html

A man cannot drift up into a corner of some green lane, and stay in his cottage out of the tide of life, as was once the case. The tide comes to him." Richard Jefferies 1883. Sunday, 2 August 2015. Christmas comes but once a year was the title of a 1930's short film, and in most years this is undoubtedly true. However in August 2015 the Festive Season began early, four months early, and with a nod to Rudolph involved a species of animal we don't expect to see on the wing - ants to be precise. This mass e...

http://bluestoneimages.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html

Hiker and photographer with a passion for the natural world and wild places. Friday, 16 January 2015. Wanders with the Weather Gods in Teesdale. I have not really had time to write individual blog posts for each day so its just a bit of a roundup of some of the better days out. Obviously not a hill walk, but it was still nice to head out locally for a bit of a wander. Living here you tend to take places such as the grounds of the Bowes Museum for granted. Hiker and photographer with a passion for the natural world and wild places. Monday, 15 June 2015. Picos de Europa Mountains 2015. Set in northern Spain and only a few miles inland from the coast, the Picos de Europa are not necessarily that well known to walkers in the UK. Agged limestone peaks, deep gorges, leafy forests, wonderful wildlife and a weather pattern that makes temperature inversions a regular feature, it's a mountain lovers paradise. Pena Vieja, which could be accessed from El Cable. Being...

Hiker and photographer with a passion for the natural world and wild places. Monday, 15 September 2014. A selection of images from the last week or so. If you are out and about early in Upper Teesdale you can feel that summer is coming to an end. Most mornings now have a bite to them, but this particular morning was the first for a while where I experienced really cold fingers. River Tees and Wynch Bridge. Great Stony Hill via Coldberry End. CABINET OF CURIOSITIES

Some natural wonders from North East England. Sunday, January 14, 2018. There have been bullfinches in the garden almost every day since Christmas. The attraction for them is a winter-flowering cherry Prunus subhirtella autumnalis. Which produces a continuous supply of flower buds from November until the end of March. The ground underneath the tree is littered with petals that they have torn off while they've been feeding, but the tree just keeps producing more. The idea may have arisen because the male,...
