Established in 1978, BRAMS was the first Aboriginal community controlled health service in the Kimberley region. In response to perceived deficiencies in the health services then available, an Aboriginal community action group elected a committee of management following a series of meetings. The fledgling service used space at the St John of God Convent in Broome and consisted initially of a volunteer administrator, driver, Aboriginal registered nurse and receptionist. Kutjunka clinical services comprise the communities of Balgo, Billiluna and Mulan. The Kutjungka communities have a health committee and KAMSC provides the clinical services under contract for Western Australian Community Health Service (WACHS). Yura Yungi Medical Service (YYMS) in Halls Creek was established in 1987 as an Aboriginal community controlled health service providing holistic, culturally appropriate curative services with integrated preventative programs. YYMS has a governing board elected by the community and a Chief Executive Officer who is appointed by the board to manage the service under their direction. Transport is provided by clinic drivers for those people in need and as part of YYMS outreach services.
