Melissa in Stephenville: What do you mean, you don't have metadata experience?
http://melissainstephenville.blogspot.com/2011/03/what-do-you-mean-you-dont-have-metadata.html
Wednesday, March 9, 2011. What do you mean, you don't have metadata experience? This has been in my drafts for a while. I finally decided to publish it. Maybe one of these days I'll publish all the other drafts I have sitting around.). If you know MARC, you have metadata experience. You may not have experience with Dublin Core or EAD or ONIX or XML or whatever else, but you. A valid worry, what with all the employers who seem to want new employees who can be put to work with little or no training.).

Melissa in Stephenville: "You say you want a revolution"
http://melissainstephenville.blogspot.com/2010/12/you-say-you-want-revolution.html
Monday, December 6, 2010. You say you want a revolution". This is a bit of a rambling post, but the general topic is RDA. That seems to be all anyone ever talks about in the cataloging world anymore. Not surprising, really. There are a lot of complaints about RDA being voiced on the OCLC-CAT listserv, of all places. Why OCLC-CAT? I'm pretty sure it started because of the way OCLC has been allowing RDA data (authority and bibliographic) to be added to the WorldCat database. Let's be clear about this: the ...

Open Source Software and Rhetorical Questions about the Internet's Future: Learn to write, computer geeks!
http://devilishpenguin.blogspot.com/2011/02/learn-to-write-computer-geeks.html
Monday, February 14, 2011. Learn to write, computer geeks! I read a lot of posts from computer geeks. Heck, I interact with a lot of computer geeks. I could begin posting here some discussion of RAID arrays, *nix commands and scripts, or differences between postgresql and mysql, that might illustrate a point that I want to get across. (I really could; it's not that I don't know how.) It's that my reader (I hesitate to put an "s" there because I think Carol is the only person who reads me! I'm a geek- gra...

Open Source Software and Rhetorical Questions about the Internet's Future: Learning through observation
http://devilishpenguin.blogspot.com/2011/01/learning-through-observation.html
Sunday, January 23, 2011. I am enrolled in a usability research course this semester, and my first assignment for class was to conduct a site visit, to observe someone doing his/her job. This goes directly to usability research because, to perform usability testing, one must learn to observe users, must learn to pay attention to what users do- only to take in, not to assign value, criticize, or make judgment. Just to observe. January 25, 2011 at 8:36 AM. December 27, 2011 at 4:58 AM. Came into the scene&...

Open Source Software and Rhetorical Questions about the Internet's Future: Usability Testing: What gets tested, what gets usabilified?
http://devilishpenguin.blogspot.com/2011/01/usability-testing-what-gets-tested-what.html
Friday, January 28, 2011. Usability Testing: What gets tested, what gets usabilified? Should usability research be performed through grounded theory- where results of a usability test determine how the product gets changed- or through traditional empirical theory (whether that is experimental, quasi-experimental, etc.), where the researcher begins with a specific question or hypothesis and tries to solve this through usability testing? When testing in usability, is the item being tested? My work at the S...

RDA in Europe: or the implementation domino effect | Thing blogging

First it was for blogging about 23 Things, now it's just for blogging other things. RDA in Europe: or the implementation domino effect. Posted September 7, 2010. I have already briefly discussed. The RDA in Europe seminar I attended last month. However, since the presentations have now been made available online. For those who would like an overview of the reasons behind, history and overall development of RDA, the introductory talk by Alan Danskin. Seem quite sceptical about aspects of the new code and ...
