History of the Chantry Chapel Wakefield. The Chantry Chapel of St Mary the Virgin built by the townspeople of Wakefield in the mid 14 century as an integral part of Wakefield's new stone bridge (which replaced earlier wooden bridges) across the River Calder. the first licensed in 1356. Mass for the feast of the nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Latin Mass Society will celebrate the feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary on Thursday September 8th at 7.30 pm. The Chantry Chapel of St Mary Wakefield. The Chantry Chapel of St Mary the Virgin was built in the mid 14th century when the stone bridge replaced a wooden one. It is one of only three surviving bridge chapels in England and, with the bridge, is a scheduled ancient monument and a Grade I listed building.
