Each morning from May through October, volunteers in Sea Turtle Patrol walk the Gulf of Mexico beaches looking for evidence of sea turtle activity. Volunteers walk a mile-long segment of beach, often in pairs, anywhere from 2 mornings to 7 mornings per week. For each nest, the patrollers fill out a page full of data, including where and when the nest was laid, what species of turtle laid the nest, if any protection was provided, if the turtle encountered any obstructions, etc.

The Island's Better Nature: April 2015

http://pieenvironmental.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html

Sunday, April 26, 2015. The Private Life of a Sanderling, an Arctic Snowbird in Florida‏. Sanderling V4Y at Palm Island. We are surrounded by a profusion of amazing animal life of many types, yet the birds especially appeal to the human mind as expressions of beauty and mystery. How many times have you gone to the beach and seen tiny birds running rapidly in the surf zone picking up food? These sanderlings are common almost everywhere, yet how much do we know about them? The Island's Better Nature: July 2015

Wednesday, July 22, 2015. Dazzling Insects of Summer‏. Caterpillar white dotted prominent Nadata. Too often we focus in our nature studies on one particular group of animals or plants (birds or mushrooms for example). I am not sure what the origin of this "species-chauvinism" is, but it denies the naturalist in all of us some remarkable opportunities to marvel at the wide biodiversity of life all around us. Amber-winged spreadwings in "wheel" position. There are large numbers at a pond I built in the woo...

Saturday, July 11, 2015. Relaxing after a hard days work gathering nuts. So you are a fox squirrel and you are tired on a hot summer's day after collecting lots of nuts and burying them. What do you do for relaxation? Stretch out and contemplate an afternoon nap in the shade of a big tree. I took this photo while doing the same myself. So maybe squirrels and people are not so different? Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Dazzling Insects of Summer‏. Relaxing after a hard days work gathering nuts.

The Island's Better Nature: Biking for Natural History‏

http://pieenvironmental.blogspot.com/2015/08/biking-for-natural-history.html

Tuesday, August 4, 2015. Biking for Natural History‏. Some butterflies tend to congregate on trails as open spots in the forest. This eastern comma seemed to be sunning itself with open wings as did a nearby red admiral. However a clubtail dragonfly, a black shouldered spiny legs, was also admiring the red admiral and swooped over, caught and ate it! Male box turtle plastron.
