You're not gonna die. Friday, June 12, 2009. So there's no way that I can explain in detail about what has happened since my last update, so in summary:. I went to Okinawa. I visited Nagoya a few times. Tyler and Jason Jason came to visit on different occasions. One of my neighbors' apartments burned down. I heard about how an ex-hudson coworker shot and killed his wife, then shot himself in the head. Shinobu finally released the album " Strange Spring Air. We recorded before I left to Japan.

Books and Shit!: Up Above the World (Bowles)
http://booksandshit.blogspot.com/2010/01/up-above-world-bowles.html
It is our misfortune that the world is reality." -Alpha 60. Tuesday, January 12, 2010. Up Above the World (Bowles). Paul Bowles certainly fits into this strange niche. His books seem to primarily revolve around couples who are out of their depths in some foreign land, and always give the impression that something horrible is on the verge of happening. In The Sheltering Sky. This lopsidedness appears again in Up Above the World. Where Bowles truly succeeds (again, as he did in The Sheltering Sky. Scenes l...

However quietly, the shadow that has been cast by the full-bandedness of the Mountain Goats' previous four albums ( Tallahassee. We Shall All be Healed. Finally emerges into the fullness of the day at the beginning of Heretic Pride. The album starts with a four count of drumsticks. This is no small statement from a band whose previous 15 albums. The Mountain Goats appear to have actually turned into a band.

Books and Shit!: June 2010
http://booksandshit.blogspot.com/2010_06_01_archive.html
It is our misfortune that the world is reality." -Alpha 60. Tuesday, June 8, 2010. The mystery of the map, and of going. Somewhere is by now so much a part of The Mountain Goats' consciousness that it is practically a joke. "Going to San Diego," "Going to Jamaica," Going to Georgia," Going to Marrakesh," and the 41 other songs that fall into the Going to. We got in your car and we hit the highway. Like at least 45 other Mountain Goats songs, it begins with the concept of "going" somewhere. Like all the a...

you're not gonna die
http://somasndrmr.blogspot.com/2008/09/about-month-ago-my-coworker-nick-told.html
You're not gonna die. Tuesday, September 23, 2008. About a month ago, my coworker Nick told me that he wanted to check out a manga convention in Tokyo. It sounded like a good idea considering I've never gone to one before in Japan. I was expecting all sorts of weirdos, and I was a little disappointed when I saw that everyone seemed to be pretty normal when we arrived. But where were all the cosplay people? The people that dress up as Japanese characters) I had been to Fanime con once in San Jose, and the...

Books and Shit!: February 2010
http://booksandshit.blogspot.com/2010_02_01_archive.html
It is our misfortune that the world is reality." -Alpha 60. Saturday, February 20, 2010. In the First Circle (Solzhenitsyn). Alexandr Solzhenitsyn (1918-2008) has, in a very short period of time, gone from an author who I appreciate to one who consistently amazes me. Though this book originally appeared in 1968 (six years before his massive The Gulag Archipelago. Causes every action to send ripples out for miles. Like the sharashka prison where most of the events take place, the book is so packed ful...

Books and Shit!: October 2009
http://booksandshit.blogspot.com/2009_10_01_archive.html
It is our misfortune that the world is reality." -Alpha 60. Monday, October 5, 2009. After hearing the program I was, for a while, incredibly interested in lobotomy. This eventually resulted in the Hard Girls song 'The Orbitoclast.' But I didn't actually become interested in reading Mr. Dully's book about his life until I found out something that I somehow missed during the radio program: he is from, lived in, and still lives in the south Bay Area- much of his life spent in San Jose. Tonight We Mean It.

Books and Shit!: March 2010
http://booksandshit.blogspot.com/2010_03_01_archive.html
It is our misfortune that the world is reality." -Alpha 60. Thursday, March 11, 2010. A Farewell to Arms (Hemingway). The poetry of heroism appeals irresitably to those who don't go to a war, and even more so to those whom the war is making enormously wealthy". There are two other novels which strike me as going through similar movements via WWI: German Ernst Jünger's Storm of Steel. And Frenchman Louis-Ferndinand Céline's Journey to the End of the Night. The first two thirds of A Farewell to Arms. They,...
