Sans le Nom: The Word of the Day
http://sanslenom.blogspot.com/2013/12/december-16.html
Saturday, December 14, 2013. The Word of the Day. Today is my birthday. I turn 46 officially at 11:04 pm, which is uncharacteristic because that's way past my bedtime. Last year I made a Facebook goof and threw a lavish party. This year I'm spending a little less. My present to myself is this. A chance to sit down in a cafe on President Clinton Avenue and write for myself. I'll say, "Mom, I think I was born on a full stomach.". And I'll cry a little bit as she tells me she loves me and hangs up the phone.

Tuesday, December 16, 2014. The perception of what is small is the secret of clear. Sightedness; the guarding of what is soft and tender is the secret. Of strength. - Lao Tzu. When I was very young, my mom read to me every night, and when I started first grade, she taught me to read. In essence, she gave me the gifts of life and literacy, yet while I have certainly enjoyed the former to its fullest (thanks, Mom! I'm a little slow sometimes. And Hansel and Gretel were arrested for burglary and capital mur...

Sans le Nom: February 2015
http://sanslenom.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html
Tuesday, February 24, 2015. Dead in D.C. It's a little-known fact (or maybe a well-known one) that a lot of people die on the toilet. Elvis Presley being, possibly, one of the most famous examples. I know this because I am a dry cleaner's daughter and was intrigued by an article in the New Yorker. At any rate, I went to Washington, D.C. for a conference on Tuesday. What could it be? Yeah, flights cancelled. And then I sat back on the cool marble floor (the hotel is next door to the White House, what do y...

Sans le Nom: Lessons I Learned from Family and Friends #1: The Wedding Cake
http://sanslenom.blogspot.com/2015/06/lessons-i-learned-from-family-and.html
Tuesday, June 2, 2015. Lessons I Learned from Family and Friends #1: The Wedding Cake. Of course, that was the whole point of the exercise: be uncomfortable until you find a place of comfort with the group you will spend this time with, recognize each as a person and not as somehow a representative of a color or a belief or a generation or a place. So my friend told me a story. But then she had to transport the finished cake back to the un-airconditioned farmhouse over several miles of dirt road. So from...

Wednesday, August 1, 2012. Going out of Business. F-Bomb Alert: My mom should not read this post (she will anyway). My teaching career is officially, finally, and irrevocably over. After 19 years in the biz, I've had enough. A few months ago, a friend of mine said, "You know, there are problems at every job; I just need a different set of problems." And I guess I kind of took her statement into my own heart. I didn't actually sign up for a teaching career. Like most things in my life, it fell into my...

I am sure of nothing, not even myself. Not Asking Much →. August 9, 2015. I wonder whether I could assemble a group in Hot Springs Village people who enjoy spicy food to regularly venture out to restaurants to explore spicy stuff and/or gather at individuals’ homes to make and eat spicy dishes? The answer, of course, is yes. Whether I will make it happen remains to be seen. Tell someone else about this:. Love not what you are but what you may become." Miguel de Cervantes. Not Asking Much →. I am sure of nothing, not even myself. Two Hundred Twenty-Two →. August 9, 2015. How can such a modest obligation become oppressive? I consider everything I’ve written to be fodder for spurring more writing. Every story, every rumination, every incomplete vignette is fuel. Though I don’t require much of myself, the little I do require is enough. For now. Tell someone else about this:. Love not what you are but what you may become." Miguel de Cervantes.
