Students On Facebook: What are they thinking? I'm officially one of the world's worst bloggers, since I haven't posted since the summer. Yes, I suck. But now I'm compelled to share what I see as a bit of an ethical dilemma. Maybe it's an ethical dilemma. I'm not sure. Maybe you can tell me. I didn't mention to the students that I could see their activities, because, duh, they friended me. But I wanted to say something like: You were well enough to go to the park on Thursday and pose with the sun in y...

Oh, Trusted First Reader, how I love thee. I've finished the third draft of MINDKILLER, which means it's in good enough shape to give to Trusted Reader for a critique. This makes me nervous, and I have to restrain myself from hovering over him and repeatedly asking: What's going on in the book now? How do you like it? Are you buying it? The good news: He claims to be so caught up in the story at times that he forgets to critique. We're all at risk. Over at tumblr. If you love fish and fishing, come v...

I am not a zombie. I'm a writer, teacher, and sloppy guitar player. I like Hello Kitty, giant fish, B-movies, and beer. My novel, Brains: A Zombie Memoir, is coming out this spring from HarperCollins. I feel like I won the lottery. This blog is to talk about that book and the new one I'm working on, which I can't mention without jinxing, fingers crossed, knock on Formica. So maybe I won't mention it, but I'll talk about other stuff. Like movies and Big Foot and fishing. And brains. Toad Suck, Arkansas.

Recession-Fabulous: October 2009

Working for a Living. October 4, 2009. I hear parents talking about how expensive school dances are. The dress, the hair, the shoes, etc. The next year, planning ahead a bit, we found a dress in an outlet store in Branson, and spent $35. Much better. Much cheaper. And no one else had one. This year, I found a vintage dress at a Goodwill. The price? Thrift stores are full of beautiful formals. Some take a bit of imagination, although nothing so drastic as Pretty in Pink. Links to this post. We're a bunch ...

Working for a Living. May 21, 2009. A Cardboard Box and a Free Afternoon. When I was young there was nothing so fun as a whole afternoon and a fresh cardboard box. It still takes very little to keep me entertained. I get this from my mother, who once made an entire play-kitchen for me from a series of found boxes and a little poster paint. Move over, Little Tikes. I did a little searching and had a good laugh over the modern version the Box as Toy. Then give it to your kids. There's no need to tell t...

Working for a Living. February 22, 2012. Save money AND save the world. In all our talk about saving money in tight times, we've neglected to talk about how to save money on utilities. Consumer Reports offers an article titled You can save $1,500 with these 4 strategies. Weather stripping really makes a difference. We added weather stripping to our front door, and the breeze that had been in the front hallway disappeared. You can, of course, spend a huge amount of money on new windows, but in a lot of ca...
