What is the Cryosphere? Second Cryosphere Theme Workshop. IGOS Cryosphere Theme (IGOS-Cryo) development. Workshop was held in Yokohama, Japan (50 km south of Tokyo) 24-25 April 2006. What is the Cryosphere? The Cryosphere Theme promotes a cryosphere observing system, CryOS, that includes more than simply measurements of snow and ice properties. It must have all of the following five components: satellite remote sensing instruments, networks of ground-based instrumentation, aircraft-based measurements, modelling, assimilation, and reanalysis systems, and a data management system. Of course, there are many other planned IPY projects that involve the cryosphere, and some of the investigators are important contributors to the Cryosphere Theme effort.
