Ecology, conservation, photography. Tuesday, 20 May 2014. The flowers are quite spectacular at the moment, the Bluebells are going over, but the campion is in full flower producing swathes of pink or white flowers. I should probably try and get some photos of puffins in the flowers really, but I’ve been leaving my camera behind recently whilst going around my study sites in the name of reducing the weight in my backpack! Pink Campion and Bluebells. Pink Campion at South Stream. Using a creative filter.

Ecology, conservation, photography. Monday, 25 August 2014. Sunrise on the marsh. The Teifi ringing group. Reed warbler growth bar. One interesting thing to see in the plumage of these birds is growth bars. If there is an change in food supply while the feathers are growing it can leave a mark. In a juvenile which grows its tail all at once it shows up all the way across. Thursday, 21 August 2014. Ringing at the Teifi Marsh. It was quite exciting to catch a Kingfisher, but then later on to catch another...

http://alastairwilsonphotos.blogspot.com/2015/01/gentoo-penguins.html
Ecology, conservation, photography. Monday, 26 January 2015. Two species of Penguins breed on Bird Island, Gentoo and Macaroni. We are lucky to have a Gentoo colony only a few minutes walk from the base, so it’s easy to pop over and take a few photos when there is some spare time. Gentoo adult with its chick. Adults and chicks in the colony. Gentoo’s can start breeding at 2 years old, with most birds breeding by 2-3 years. A big chick and a smaller chick. 13 August 2015 at 09:14. Ecology, conservation, photography. Friday, 27 June 2014. The researchers at North Haven booked a boat to go out to the Celtic deep for some Manx Sheawater work, as there was spare space in the boat a few of us got the chance to go for a ride too. It was my first day off for about a month, a very welcome break from normal work (I still did one study plot though! The Dales Sailing RIB, well kitted out with two big engines! Researcher, Oli, enjoying some lunch on the way out, tuna pasta. Two big attraction...

Alastair Wilson Photos: Wandering Albatross
http://alastairwilsonphotos.blogspot.com/2015/01/wandering-albatross.html
Ecology, conservation, photography. Sunday, 11 January 2015. One of the most impressive birds on Bird Island has to be the Wandering Albatross. They are, when you get up close, just massive! Despite this huge size they are incredibly graceful birds, in the air at least. I takes almost 12 months for the eggs to hatch, chicks to grow, and then eventually fledge. This chick was still around on the meadows while adults have been courting, renewing their pair bonds, and displaying ready to breed. Interested i...

Alastair Wilson Photos: March 2013
http://alastairwilsonphotos.blogspot.com/2013_03_01_archive.html
Ecology, conservation, photography. Tuesday, 19 March 2013. Back on base Christmas was quiet and very pleasant. We decorated the church and ate lots of festive treats, washed down with mulled wine, and had our own little carol service. The tree looked particularly nice, although I couldn’t help but do a bit of zooming on the slow exposure for some added light effects! Base Christmas dinner was a true feast, roast chicken (I think 12 of them! With every trimming we could get our hands on! Well, I’ve...
