Daily Yamazaki: May 2010
http://dailyyamazaki.blogspot.com/2010_05_01_archive.html
An anecdotal reference guide to fast and junk foods of Japan. Wednesday, May 26, 2010. Lifting the logo from the real thing, Asahi Green Cola positions itself in the market as a "natural" product with a sort of "trendy" appeal. Of course when your main barker is a popular, though somewhat long in tooth, J-Pop star, one is convinced that the marketers at Asahi have no idea what the kids are into. Perhaps the marketing is toward boomers, who probably also don't care about Kiyosuke Himoro either. It just hi...

An anecdotal reference guide to fast and junk foods of Japan. Monday, February 8, 2010. Here's my recipe. It's about as simple as one gets. 200 - 300 grams mentaiko. 2 T unsalted butter. 2 T finely chopped onion. 250 ml cream (butterfat content to your desire). Finely chopped negi (Japanese leek). Bring a large pot of water to a boil and add pasta. Cook for appropriate doneness. This can be done in about 9 - 13 minutes. It's that easy! Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). My original intent in writing this blog w...

An anecdotal reference guide to fast and junk foods of Japan. Tuesday, June 8, 2010. But their products do show up packaged upon shelves throughout the nation. And one in particular has become a bit of guilty pleasure for me. The Hokkaido Steamed Cheesecake (北海道チーズ蒸しケーキ) is one of the most beguiling and strange things that pass for normal here. In truth, it's not really that good, but like a bad habit, I crave it. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). My original intent in writing this blog was to make a reference...

An anecdotal reference guide to fast and junk foods of Japan. Wednesday, December 2, 2009. So, of course, tempted by constant novelty and having 100 yen sitting in my pocket, I had to buy the KitKat Ginger Ale Flavor (KitKat ジンジャーエール味). Can anyone resist? Cracking open the foil-wrapped inner package, an unmistakable whiff of ginger ale filled my nose. Wow! I can hardly wait! Check out the new flavors here - http:/ www.rakuten.ne.jp/gold/e-nestle/kitkat.html. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Of the more ubiqu...
Daily Yamazaki: May 2009
http://dailyyamazaki.blogspot.com/2009_05_01_archive.html
An anecdotal reference guide to fast and junk foods of Japan. Thursday, May 28, 2009. The inspirations of co-branding can take the consumer down strange and winding roads. One of the more absurd, and thus ultimately clever ideas has come from the folks who inspired the title of this blog, the Yamazaki Baking Company. Or Mr Brain's brain core. The meaning of trepan. But of course, pan. Become a bit conflated and one's left stumped and mystified as to what's really going on here.*. Tuesday, May 26, 2009.

Ajimi 味見: January 2014

Tuesday, January 28, 2014. Here's what you get. But if you're hell-bent on eating up the last of great bluefins, you may be disappointed in that the stuff that's hitting the bottom of the food chain (places like Chiyoda Sushi) is often pretty bad quality. But, on the other hand, it's probably got all those PCBs and mercury that your body's been craving. Top, second from right, hotate (scallop) - sustainable! And yes, a good, fresh hotate in winter can't be beat. Bottom left, anago (sea eel) - the verdict...

Saturday, September 7, 2013. A Sheep's Eye View of Breakfast. Here's the routine. First they rush us through a little door down to the milking pen. It's a bit of a tussle sometimes to find a place to eat, but there's a place for each of us. Last sheep in gets the position furthest from the entrance, but closest to the exit. While we're eating the stocks come down. May as well give in and enjoy what comes next. The shepherds, pretty upbeat guys. And do I mean guys. Big lusty men. And it's off to work!
Ajimi 味見: How Do You Like Your Lungs?
http://ajimi-japan.blogspot.com/2014/10/how-do-you-like-your-lungs.html
Thursday, October 16, 2014. How Do You Like Your Lungs? When you put the words lungs and smoke together, an image comes to mind. Probably not of the culinary kind. However, the Ajimi team was out one October night in Shimbashi, one of Tokyo's best stops for the odd, the old-fashioned, the delightful and the sometimes terrifying. As we left, we did notice a piggy plush toy hanging from a ventilation grille in the ceiling. Is this how they smoke 'em? Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Pick of the week.

Monday, November 5, 2012. Boro: Pieces of the past. Or rags, and they contained a wealth of family history. But as people migrated from the remote villages the boro. Were left behind in attics and barns. They became objects of shame over an impoverished past rather than veneration. Then along game Chuzaburo Tanaka, an ethnographer whose boro. A fraction of his total 30,000-piece collection of folk craft - are on display at the Amuse Museum. Links to this post. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Pick of the week.

The Honor 7 actually looks a lot like Huawei's current flagship smartphone model, the Huawei Mate. It is fatter and heavier, but it looks every bit as premium as the Mate and you would be hard pressed to tell at a glance, which of the two was the flagship phone and which one the cut-price killer midrange offering. In fact, busi...

An anecdotal reference guide to fast and junk foods of Japan. Thursday, October 16, 2014. Not this year. When was the pastry made? Probably not this year either. At least it didn't taste like it. Monday, October 6, 2014. Especially considering the basic quality of basic quality Japanese cheese. Does this idea of BAKED CHEESE send some signal to the Japanese consumer that this is a good thing, something desirable? These people claim to have invented the anpan, the classic azuki bean filled bun that was or...

It’s that time of year. One thing about sugaring season is that it gets us out after being stuck in the house after what sometimes seems like a long winter. There’s no snow on the ground at least where the sun shines, you’ll still find snow tucked in places where the sun doesn’t hit it to melt. The buds are starting to appear on my lilac bushes, which got me so excited to see. I’m also getting excited to start getting my plants going for my vegetable garden.it’s that time of year. It’s been a slow star...
