Developing Spiritual Community

Tuesday, 26 June 2012. Anniversaries - daring to change. I am one of an army of bloggers for Heritage Open Days and a month or two back wrote a piece about Anniversaries. Then on Facebook someone asked whether anniversary services should always stay the same. This was a good prompt for me to think beyond what I had written, to think about how we actually commemorate anniversaries, about how we respect tradition whilst being true to our ethos of dynamic and emerging understanding and spiritual practice.

Developing Spiritual Community: Communities as families

http://www.dev-spiritual-community.blogspot.com/2012/05/communities-as-families.html

Tuesday, 8 May 2012. Sometimes communities can become like families. To some this can be comforting, to some stifling and to some exhausting. Those of us who seem to find ourselves effortlessly taking on a mothering role can find ourselves experiencing similar emotions to being at home. We value the role but could do without the added responsibilities. We can endlessly moan or we can do something ourselves to adjust how people perceive us and what we do. Or can't they be bothered to file what I send them?

Developing Spiritual Community: August 2011

http://www.dev-spiritual-community.blogspot.com/2011_08_01_archive.html

Wednesday, 31 August 2011. The nature of services when developing spiritual community. One thing that I have noticed at our Meeting House is that our services are moving away from 'services' and developing into conversations. There is often no sermon. The question, 'what does this all mean for our community? Is never far away. The service then becomes an open conversation within the community about what is valued and our developing spirituality. S about whether we can agree about what ministry is about.

Developing Spiritual Community: Ministering to the individual or to the whole congregation

http://www.dev-spiritual-community.blogspot.com/2012/06/ministering-to-individual-or-to-whole.html

Saturday, 23 June 2012. Ministering to the individual or to the whole congregation. There has been a comment on Facebook which includes the idea that when you lead a service you minister to the needs of the whole congregation and not the individuals within it. Which begs the question about what the needs of a congregation are, if they are not the sum total of the needs of the individuals? Should we stop them attending if they fail to change their ways? In society at large, at least in the UK, there is a ...

Wednesday, 14 December 2011. Where Unitarians get their inspiration. And yet more inspiration from Facebook - who would have thought? There was a debate about whether people attending Christian services understood much about the finer points of theology and at some point I wrote. I think that people are much more alive to their own personal relationship with God/the divine and much more open to other influences e.g. the TV, books, the radio and the Internet then in times gone by. Jewish and Christian teac...

Governance4Unitarians: November 2011

http://governance4unitarians.blogspot.com/2011_11_01_archive.html

Wednesday, November 30, 2011. How to win friends and influence people. Was in a discussion about the future direction of the Unitarian community. The thread started by an EC member (the only one who engages on Facebook) begins thus. I'm on the EC. Throw things if you like! But I think he was only joking! My contribution was summed up by him as. Louise Rogers questions's Jen's view that youth are essential to our future . So I did not say that the choices weren't difficult just that they were similar to w...

Governance4Unitarians: July 2011

http://governance4unitarians.blogspot.com/2011_07_01_archive.html

Saturday, July 30, 2011. Working with our beneficiaries. Having an interview certainly does stimulate my thinking. One of the questions that is often asked at an interview for voluntary sector jobs is about user-involvement. This can be a bit tricky especially if you are a user-involvement cynic like myself. I know which one I'd choose. When the choice made is user-involvement, more professionals get employed and money gets taken from front-line services. If we think about our own communities we talk mor...

Governance4Unitarians: October 2011

http://governance4unitarians.blogspot.com/2011_10_01_archive.html

Friday, October 14, 2011. I was reminded of when I was brought in very late in the day to help a long-running local organisation to stave off closure. I asked the chief officer and the chair of the Board, 'How much does it cost to run this organisation every month? In these times of financial uncertainty trustees more than ever really need to step up to the plate. Monday, October 10, 2011. The other thing that I am able to do because I am paid to do it is to take action. This organisation has the nea...

Friday, May 25, 2012. Getting back to basics. So what do I mean by this? I have been helping with a business plan for a charity. The first draft was put together by two people who had never done a business plan for a charity before although they had both extensive experience of business planning. I am convinced that whether I can help this organisation or not, I will be in a better position having sketched out the basics or who owns what and who pays for what. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Thursday, March 22, 2012. The Charities Act 2011. Has now been enacted. It doesn't change anything - it. Repeals and replaces the Recreational Charities Act 1958, the Charities Act 1993 and many of the provisions of the Charities Act 2006.'. There is no change in how charities will be governed and managed but all references to charity law should now be to this act. The Charity Commission. This move will certainly make it a bit easier to understand charity law. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Saturday, March 17, 2012. Sizing of RESTful Paged Collection Resources. Fast forward a few months. Now all the teams accept that there will be page sizes. What do developers do when they are asked to pick a parameter like page size? And of course, there is an undertone of "what kind of developer are you, passing on a chance to set a value that SOMEONE has to set? So we landed on limit. Yes there would be a maximum on limit, but could a client ask for a smaller page? Let's go through these in turn:. 4) HA...
