The “white house” – from damp and dark to warm and light | Dispatches from the Field
https://dispatchesfromthefield1.wordpress.com/2014/10/10/326
Dispatches from the Field. What happens in the field stays in the field…until now. Where in the world? The “white house” – from damp and dark to warm and light. October 10, 2014. October 10, 2014. Some of the best experiences during a field season don’t have anything to do with your study species, your field site, or your research project. Given the nature of fieldwork, you tend to stumble across things that – although they aren’t what you’re looking for – are still super cool. We’ve never even loo...

Dispatches from the Field. What happens in the field stays in the field…until now. Where in the world? October 21, 2016. October 20, 2016. Do one thing every day that scares you. – Eleanor Roosevelt. In reading responses to the recently popular hashtag #fieldworkscares. I realized that luckily I haven’t had to deal with any major scares in the field (knock on wood! But nonetheless, to a first time field biologist, some minor things can feel pretty scary! It turns out that snakes are not slimy at all and ...

Dispatches from the Field. What happens in the field stays in the field…until now. Where in the world? Oh Mr Sun, Sun, Mr. Golden Sun, please don’t kill me. July 27, 2015. The sun is a real danger for work like this and for many field biologists. It’s so important to take all of the steps necessary to stay safe in the sun, and most importantly, listen to your body’s warning signs because it knows best. Standing by one of the plots I will count abundance in this summer. The spider forest →. Interested in ...

Tahoe Rim Trail 100 mile Recap | JP chronicles
https://jpchronicles.com/2012/07/30/tahoe-rim-trail-100-mile-recap
Tahoe Rim Trail 100 mile Recap. July 30, 2012. I put together a little story as to how I became interested in this race, who helped me get to this place, and how the actual race turned out. Despite my successes, I was battling a sprained ankle that kept flaring up every month or two. I began physical therapy in April, and had an x-ray to clear myself before attempting the next race. It was clear, so I headed down to the East Side for my first 100k- the last big race before my 100 miler. Ow on a much high...

Weekend at the lake. August 2, 2015. This past weekend, JP took me on a surprise trip to a beautiful mountain lake. After a two-hour drive on a super rough, winding road, we arrived at our destination lake at midnight Friday night. Under a full moon, we paddled by canoe to find an island to call home for the weekend. Moon over the mountains. oh, and we saw a shooting star about halfway across the lake…. Saturday morning, I awoke to find myself in one of the most breathtakingly beautiful places imaginable.

A rookie bird hunter training a vizsla pup, or the other way around. Ticked, Nicked, and Licked →. Before going for an afternoon hunt last week I stopped by ye olde Starbucks for some turbo juice– a little ritual that gets my brain going before the legs, which generally is a good idea. Walking to the front door I nearly stepped on a healthy looking pigeon. That plump little sucker was a nice reddish color, not the slate dirty grey most pigeons have. Albeit one with a tragic end? I’ve had pigeon bef...

Listening to Bats, Part 1: The Joy of Heterodyne. February 25, 2016. Two weeks ago I wrote a guest blog for the ‘Dispatches from the Field’ blog about a typical night of listening to bats in the field. In that post I briefly mentioned the equipment I use to listen to bats, including my trusty heterodyne bat detector, but I thought it would be worth following up with some more detail about how we can listen to bats’ echolocation. A rough simulation of a heterodyne bat detector I made in Microsoft Excel...

March 20, 2018 · 9:17 PM. Why Europe’s Center-Left Keeps Losing Elections. Italy, Germany and the EU’s Future. Dispatches From The Edge. Mar 19, 2018. More than a quarter of a century ago, much of the European center-left made a course change. Today, that compact is shattered, the once powerful center-left a shadow of its former self, and the European Union the largest trading bloc on the planet is in profound trouble. But the fall of the center-left has more to do with the 1990s course change than with ...

Dispatches from the Frigid Northlands. Something Good is Bound to Happen! Nostalgia is a funny thing. My favorite game of all time is probably Link's Awakening, the Zelda game for the original Gameboy. I remember playing it for hours and hours, wandering the dungeons and overworld. Dispatches From The Front Line. Why Make Room for Faith in Our Lives? 17 May, 2013. I want to talk about faith today. That will be a topic I will return to as I am very interested in the role of faith, and religion, in our world. This is something that has undergone a seismic shift just in my own lifetime as I am acutely aware when my children tell me things that are said to them in school. Here is a paragraph I read recently which I think sum I all up:. Here’s the thing I can’t imagine life without it&#...
