About Me and My Blog. Manhattans with Brother Cleve. October 15, 2012 in Bartenders. The Manhattan. First served in NYC in the early 1870s, this cocktail never seems to go out of style. Sure, the preferred whiskey, the proportions of ingredients, the vermouth and the garnish may vary depending on decade, but each version is still one hell of a cocktail. Two early bartending books– How To Mix Drinks: The Barkeeper’s Handbook. Both published in 1884 include a recipe for a Manhattan. This equal parts versio...

I was there on the invitation of a friend, who was herself invited by the hosting couple. Although I had arrived a few minutes early, I ran into Fred. About Me and My Blog. Summer’s Last Call. September 23, 2012 in aperol. According to the calendar, summer is now officially over! I took a little summer vaca from writing, but not from imbibing. Here are a few cocktail highlights from my summer. My favorite summer cocktail. My friends Brian and Jeff introduced me to the Intro to Aperol. And I fell in love at first sip. It is the perfect combination of bitter, savory, tart and sweet and it is amazingly drinkable! Created by Sam Treadway, Backbar). 8221; F...
Boston Dandy: October 2011
http://bostondandy.blogspot.com/2011_10_01_archive.html
Thursday, October 27, 2011. Recently, I found a couple videos of one of my favorite bartenders, Shingo Gokan of Angel's Share in New York. Seeing Angel's Share again, even in video form (in brighter lighting that I am used to and with unnecessarily overwrought slow-motion videography), made me miss it immensely. I guess that just means that I will have to make a trip down to New York sometime soon. As a bonus, below is the recipe of one of cocktails that Shingo taught me, the Speak Low. Later in the mont...

Thursday, October 25, 2012. I turned around to find a flute of Simonnet-Febvre. It was rather a trivial matter to have had at least a short conversation with each of them by the end of the night. 2010 'Les Pouches' Cave de Saumur. Alongside braised cod cheek and throat in sheep's whey. I do love drinking chenin blanc with whitefish. Lobscouse of smoked lamb leg in sunchoke broth accompanied by 2007 Côtes du Jura 'Les Bélemnites' Peggy and Jean-Pascal Buronfosse. The two nights really captured both ends o...
Boston Dandy: December 2011
http://bostondandy.blogspot.com/2011_12_01_archive.html
Wednesday, December 7, 2011. Punch, in abundant quantities. My first instinct was to go in a very classical direction, and this idea led to the first punch being the ever so popular Chatham Artillery Punch. This punch was one of the first I remember reading about before the more recent punch resurgence in the past year or so, especially following the publication of David Wondrich's Punch: The Delights and Dangers of the Flowing Bowl. 16 oz lemon juice. 1 bottle dark rum. And the Plymouth Pilgrims' Punch.
