Thursday, May 18, 2017. Butcher's Union, 438 Bridge St NW 5/18/17. It's been open less than a year and we first visited back in February. We liked it even then. Just don't try to enter through the middle door. This is the old Monte's Lounge reborn into a very cool restaurant. The dining room and bar run front to back, side by side, and have an old speakeasy feel to them. EatingOurWayThroughGrandRapids: August 2013

http://eatingourwaythroughgrandrapids.blogspot.com/2013_08_01_archive.html

Thursday, August 29, 2013. Bistro Bella Vita, Restaurant Week - 8/16/13. It's a Friday night, the four of us are looking to meet for dinner, and it's Restaurant Week when you can enjoy three courses for $25.00 at many area restaurants. There were so many restaurants with great offerings but being last minute people we had to find one that was open to take reservations that day. And Bistro Bella Vita it was. And one chose the Albacore Cruda (cerignola olive. The last two diners both selected the S and S l...

EatingOurWayThroughGrandRapids: March 2015

Sunday, March 22, 2015. Cabana Tres Amigos, 1409 60th St 3/10/15. We've heard good things about this restaurant so drove out to Kentwood to check it out. It's housed in a big building that must have been something else in a previous life. There's not much else around it but residences, and nothing to draw you to the area. But being family-owned, we were in. We asked our server if she had a favorite and she promptly recommended Carnitas pork marinated in a secret family recipe, which was listed as one of ...

EatingOurWayThroughGrandRapids: November 2014

Thursday, November 13, 2014. Garage Bar and Grill, 819 Ottawa Avenue NW 11/12/14. This reincarnation of the old Teazers Bar opened in mid-October and it is a cool spot. The garage decor is interesting, unique, and not overdone. The Radiator Grille sandwich (American, Swiss, and Provolone cheeses) can be upgraded to a Cadillac Grille by adding bacon and egg for $2.00 more. Matt couldn't resist and enjoyed its butter-soaked sourdough bread deliciousness. It was somewhat unseasoned but was brought to perfec...

Tuesday, May 6, 2014. Flat Lander's Bar, 855 Michigan St NE 5/6/14. From the street, the building that houses the restaurant is not that interesting. It's somewhat nondescript and looks so uniform you expect it to be housing national chains, although it does have some nice-looking apartments with terraces on the second floor. A local butcher shop is next door and on the end, Snap Fitness. What becomes very interesting, however, is when you walk in the door. This is the old Miller Zeilstra Lumber. We don'...

http://eatingourwaythroughgrandrapids.blogspot.com/2014/12/taqueria-garcia-3536-s-division-121914.html

Sunday, December 21, 2014. Taqueria Garcia, 3536 S Division 12/19/14. Ten days ago we lunched at Pho Soc Trang, located in the Asian Shopping Center at 4242 S Division, and on our way back north, we spotted several small hole-in-the-wall restaurants that we noted for another time. And today was one of those times. Located just north of 36th Street, the place will be missed if you blink. Another customer walked in, sat down at a table, and received table service. So it is available but you have to kno...

All Things Grand Rapids. Activities and events in the Greater Grand Rapids Michigan area. Monday, January 28, 2013. Disappointing Shows This Weekend in Grand Rapids. We started with “The Heart is a Lonely Hunter” at the Civic Theatre Saturday night, and what a disappointment it was. The actors were fine and did the best they could do with the material, which is the problem. Watch the movie of the same name and you’ll come away with a much richer appreciation of this story. All Things Grand Rapids. Activities and events in the Greater Grand Rapids Michigan area. Saturday, April 27, 2013. Meijer Gardens - 4/25/13. The weather was cool and windy, it was a Thursday, and the butterfly exhibit was a few days away from closing so I'm thinking no one will be there and I can enjoy a peaceful walk. Wrong The parking lot gave me my first clue, packed and full of buses. I ignored the clues and entered the mayhem. The boardwalk was cool relief from the crowds. Showed very high water.

All Things Grand Rapids. Activities and events in the Greater Grand Rapids Michigan area. Saturday, July 20, 2013. Steve Miller Band at Meijer Gardens - 7/18/13. Another incredibly hot and muggy evening but we were back, this time with umbrellas to block out the sun while waiting. Highly recommended. Seeing that the band formed in 1967, we weren't sure what to expect and hoped it wouldn't be a Beach Boys experience, and it wasn't. The man can still sing and play, and his band consists of top-notch pr...

All Things Grand Rapids. Activities and events in the Greater Grand Rapids Michigan area. Monday, August 26, 2013. Lyle Lovett at Meijer Gardens - 8/24/13. The best and the worst of the evening. Lyle and his very large band were professional and impressive. The band walked out and started at 7:05 (we could hear them warming up as we waited in the huge line at 6pm). Lyle joined them five minutes later and they performed together starting at 7:10. And didn't stop until 9:44pm. My Baby Don't Tolerate. Besid...

All Things Grand Rapids. Activities and events in the Greater Grand Rapids Michigan area. Tuesday, July 28, 2015. Bill Kirchen and Redd Volkaert, Ada Riverhouse 7/25/15. Doors opened around 5pm and we arrived around 5:30 with our lawn chairs, for our first ever concert at the Ada Riverhouse. Around 8pm Bill Kirchen and Redd Volkaert were up on the stage and doing their own setup work. They don't have "people" and they didn't have a back-up band or musicians. It was sweet and pure music. Sunday, December 21, 2014. Out and About This Weekend 12/18/14 - 12/21/14. Being out sick since Friday night, and just back to work last Wednesday, I felt the need to get out of the house on Thursday to go thither and yon and just be out among the land of the living. It was apparently a day for cops to be out and about and I found two along my short travels, one giving a ticket and one lying in wait at a bank. Although as one of my friends pointed out, isn't all leather used? The table and company were g...

Clues and red herrings are tossed every which way, and you’ll be hard-pressed to tell the difference. Bendix and O’Keefe play well off each other, and throughout the movie you’ll be wondering where Bendix falls on the good/evil line. At the center of th...
