All Things Grand Rapids. Activities and events in the Greater Grand Rapids Michigan area. Monday, January 28, 2013. Disappointing Shows This Weekend in Grand Rapids. We started with “The Heart is a Lonely Hunter” at the Civic Theatre Saturday night, and what a disappointment it was. The actors were fine and did the best they could do with the material, which is the problem. Watch the movie of the same name and you’ll come away with a much richer appreciation of this story. The sign language pla...The 194...

All Things Grand Rapids. Activities and events in the Greater Grand Rapids Michigan area. Saturday, April 27, 2013. Meijer Gardens - 4/25/13. The weather was cool and windy, it was a Thursday, and the butterfly exhibit was a few days away from closing so I'm thinking no one will be there and I can enjoy a peaceful walk. Wrong The parking lot gave me my first clue, packed and full of buses. I ignored the clues and entered the mayhem. The boardwalk was cool relief from the crowds. Showed very high water.

All Things Grand Rapids. Activities and events in the Greater Grand Rapids Michigan area. Saturday, July 20, 2013. Steve Miller Band at Meijer Gardens - 7/18/13. Another incredibly hot and muggy evening but we were back, this time with umbrellas to block out the sun while waiting. Highly recommended. Seeing that the band formed in 1967, we weren't sure what to expect and hoped it wouldn't be a Beach Boys experience, and it wasn't. The man can still sing and play, and his band consists of top-notch pr...

All Things Grand Rapids. Activities and events in the Greater Grand Rapids Michigan area. Monday, August 26, 2013. Lyle Lovett at Meijer Gardens - 8/24/13. The best and the worst of the evening. Lyle and his very large band were professional and impressive. The band walked out and started at 7:05 (we could hear them warming up as we waited in the huge line at 6pm). Lyle joined them five minutes later and they performed together starting at 7:10. And didn't stop until 9:44pm. My Baby Don't Tolerate. Besid...

All Things Grand Rapids. Activities and events in the Greater Grand Rapids Michigan area. Tuesday, July 28, 2015. Bill Kirchen and Redd Volkaert, Ada Riverhouse 7/25/15. Doors opened around 5pm and we arrived around 5:30 with our lawn chairs, for our first ever concert at the Ada Riverhouse. Around 8pm Bill Kirchen and Redd Volkaert were up on the stage and doing their own setup work. They don't have "people" and they didn't have a back-up band or musicians. It was sweet and pure music. He not only calle...

Sunday, December 21, 2014. Out and About This Weekend 12/18/14 - 12/21/14. Being out sick since Friday night, and just back to work last Wednesday, I felt the need to get out of the house on Thursday to go thither and yon and just be out among the land of the living. It was apparently a day for cops to be out and about and I found two along my short travels, one giving a ticket and one lying in wait at a bank. Although as one of my friends pointed out, isn't all leather used? The table and company were g...

Saturday, January 15, 2011. Cover Up (1949) Alfred E. Green. Meet “a small town with big secrets.” Dennis O’Keefe is the insurance investigator who arrives to gather information about an apparent suicide before his insurance company will pay out benefits. Clues and red herrings are tossed every which way, and you’ll be hard-pressed to tell the difference. Bendix and O’Keefe play well off each other, and throughout the movie you’ll be wondering where Bendix falls on the good/evil line. At the center of th...
