Monday, October 30, 2006. What interests me most about this poem is the way Milton works the theme of the corruption of the clergy into it. Ostensibly, the poem is just this pastoral elegy to a friend, but this subtext seems a little out of place. Saint Peter at first laments Lycidas' death, but quickly turns to mentioning how many more worthy candidates for death there were. He then seems to launch into a tirade against the corrupt members of the clergy. Maybe just that they're not good at being priests.
