The Aging Pseudo-Athlete: Still fighting the fight
http://ultrarunandski.blogspot.com/2015/08/still-fighting-fight.html
Trying to stay active and healthy as a retired distance runner. Wednesday, August 12, 2015. Still fighting the fight. Last week, I worked as the "fishing instructor" for a local rec department's fishing camp. I got paid a little bit of money, but mostly I did it to help out a friend, who had lost her long-term instructor for the week. Things went just fine, I think I gave the kids some good lessons on ecology and sound environmental fishing practices, and we caught a lot of fish. On Monday, I wanted to t...

The Aging Pseudo-Athlete: Knee Crepitus
http://ultrarunandski.blogspot.com/2008/04/knee-crepitus.html
Trying to stay active and healthy as a retired distance runner. Tuesday, April 15, 2008. My knees make noises. I can really hear it when going up stairs. It's been going on for years. Some web sites describe it as a "rice krispies. In milk" noise. That's pretty accurate. My left knee, where I had a surgical ACL. Repair done six years ago, is no worse than my right knee. I do try very hard to avoid anti- inflammatories. Except for a tiny "heart dose" (81mg) of aspirin daily. My knees still creak. More lik...

The Aging Pseudo-Athlete: August 2015
http://ultrarunandski.blogspot.com/2015_08_01_archive.html
Trying to stay active and healthy as a retired distance runner. Thursday, August 27, 2015. My wife and I just spent an extended weekend in PA, with the main purpose of the trip being my 35th high school reunion. It was great to see about a 1/4 of my class show up, but we are certainly getting old, it seems. We had no name tags this year, and as we get older, I think we need them more and more. Later that day, I was the DD as my wife enjoyed some craft brews at a taproom called Holy Hound. Monday, we drov...

The Aging Pseudo-Athlete: Zeroing in
http://ultrarunandski.blogspot.com/2015/07/zeroing-in.html
Trying to stay active and healthy as a retired distance runner. Monday, July 27, 2015. Basically, they measured my iron by taking blood. They then had be drink a large quantity of iron in a liquid form, and come back two hours later to see how well my gut was absorbing the iron. This was apparently the only test result that came back on Friday and I got a long phone message from the doctor. This means that something is going on in my small intestine, preventing me from absorbing dietary iron. But, I'm ge...

The Aging Pseudo-Athlete: CrossFit "Karen"
http://ultrarunandski.blogspot.com/2011/10/crossfit-karen.html
Trying to stay active and healthy as a retired distance runner. Thursday, October 27, 2011. What could be more simple than 150 Wall Balls? Just do them as fast as you can. Well, I did a sprint workout on Monday. Tuesday, I did some lifts that I rarely do, and I was sore going into the workout yesterday. After our warm-up, I was a bit more loose, but still somewhat sore. Now today, I just need to see if I'm too sore to work out. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Closed for the Labor Day holiday. The Aging Pseudo-Athlete: A sudden turnaround
http://ultrarunandski.blogspot.com/2015/07/a-sudden-turnaround.html
Trying to stay active and healthy as a retired distance runner. Thursday, July 23, 2015. Sunday, I felt a little better, but still rested a lot to make sure I'd get through the Neil Young show. Monday, despite a short night of sleep after the show, I felt the best I've felt in a month. But, it was just one good day, and I've had lots of decent days in the past couple months, only to feel terrible the next day. Tuesday, I felt pretty good again. Two days in a row! The strength workout was 10 rounds of 5 s...

The Aging Pseudo-Athlete: A partial answer - at least
http://ultrarunandski.blogspot.com/2015/07/a-partial-answer-at-least.html
Trying to stay active and healthy as a retired distance runner. Tuesday, July 14, 2015. A partial answer - at least. That's what my doctor told me on the phone yesterday after looking at my lab results. I had told him in the office on Friday that I thought there was no chance that I had anemia, because my hemoglobin levels were on the high end of normal before I gave blood last time. So, I'm going to take iron for 2 weeks. Retest iron levels, hemoglobin levels, reticulocyte count, and CRP, along with...

The Aging Pseudo-Athlete: Regression
http://ultrarunandski.blogspot.com/2015/06/regression.html
Trying to stay active and healthy as a retired distance runner. Tuesday, June 30, 2015. I've been writing since early May that something has been "off" with my health. I've been tired a lot, needed more rest days, had no "pop" with either strength-based or endurance-based work at CrossFit, and I've been sleeping a lot. No, really a lot. Luckily, I see my doctor again next Friday, the 10th. But, my wife is so alarmed by how I've felt that she demanded I see someone else earlier. She even suggested...After...

The Aging Pseudo-Athlete: One more on testosterone levels
http://ultrarunandski.blogspot.com/2012/08/one-more-on-testosterone-levels.html
Trying to stay active and healthy as a retired distance runner. Friday, August 10, 2012. One more on testosterone levels. So, how did I end up with low testosterone levels? And, is it possible to reverse the condition rather than depending on medications? Those are two questions I've thought about a lot over the past few months. For example, every time I'm about to stick a needle into my thigh, I wonder if there is another way. First of all, how did I get here? Since 2007, I have been lifting weights reg...

The Aging Pseudo-Athlete: Another deadlift PR and some thoughts about CrossFit
http://ultrarunandski.blogspot.com/2012/02/another-deadlift-pr-and-some-thoughts.html
Trying to stay active and healthy as a retired distance runner. Wednesday, February 1, 2012. Another deadlift PR and some thoughts about CrossFit. After a rest day Monday, and a moderately tough CF workout on Tuesday night (snatch complexes, and 100 reps each of pull-ups and box jumps), I woke up feeling tired this morning. Because of an obligation after work today, I either had to work out this morning or not at all. So, I drank a cup of really poor quality hotel coffee and headed to CrossFit. I don't e...
