Early American Woodworking and Pioneer skills. Monday, November 19, 2012. I didn’t mean that as a pun. I forgot to take detailed pictures of my forge as Cincinnatus requested, but I did include a photo of the fire box and clinker breaker. I purchased it from Kayne and Son Blacksmithing Supplies out of North Carolina. Yes it was expensive, and yes I could have welded one up, but it was easier to buy one and in the end it will outlast and work better than anything I could have cobbled together.

What makes this story so interesting to me is that oak logs were used. There were few trees of any kind this far west in Nebraska, but this location was unique as it had a very large growth of oaks. Here is a photo selection of hazel coppice stools I took at Wood Nook on Wednesday lunchtime. Notice how the poles are bent and differing thicknesses when the stool has stood uncut for so long, there are some very old thick branches in there. This is the regrowth a couple of years after cutting. They made quite a job of it, but I think a lot of it has fallen in through neglect and heavy floods.
