From Scotland to Siberia. And then to Shanghai! An Edinburgh couple's Chinese adventure. Sunday, May 24, 2009. Just when you thought it was safe. Then on Friday morning, I tried to turn on a tap in Shanghai, to find that the water had gone off here too! Back home, if your water is scheduled to be switched off for five minutes you get a note through the door a week in advance. Here, the notion that they might be inconveniencing anyone simply doesn’t seem to cross their minds. 8217; ‘Too much eat! 8211; no...

From Scotland to Siberia. And then to Shanghai! An Edinburgh couple's Chinese adventure. Sunday, March 29, 2009. Knowledge, and the lack thereof. How often have you shouted that word, or even silently raised your arm on a busy street, secure in the belief that once ensconced in that vehicle you need have no further worries and will be able to switch off for a short while, as you are conveyed efficiently to your destination? Street and landmark in the UK capital. It’s a BIG place, so the taxi dr...And whe...

From Scotland to Siberia. And then to Shanghai! An Edinburgh couple's Chinese adventure. Friday, February 20, 2009. There is not a banana to be had, anywhere in Harbin. What’s all that about then? I know they’ve got an extremely long way to come – not the most right-on of fruits from a food miles perspective, I grant you – but that’s never seemed to be a problem here before. Is there a worldwide shortage? Did we miss banana day or something? We can get apples, pears, kiwi fruit, strawberries. I'm quite e...

From Scotland to Siberia. And then to Shanghai! An Edinburgh couple's Chinese adventure. Sunday, July 19, 2009. New kid on the blog. Ok, I swear if I’d thought of that title earlier I’d have posted this sooner. 2 Logistical. Getting to the hospital at 3am while in labour was supposed to be organised in advance. Big Boss was going to lay on a car. Drivers were to be primed and ready to rush to our assistance. Did this happen? 4 Administrative. My feelings regarding a certain international medical insu...

From Scotland to Siberia. And then to Shanghai! An Edinburgh couple's Chinese adventure. Saturday, April 4, 2009. Well Tomorrow, Sunday 5th April, is my birthday. I shall be (apparently, so they tell me) 41. Forty-one. Was a more depressing age ever invented? Dia de los Muertos. Though sadly without the fabby costumes, Watty and Mark! As one of China’s few solar festivals it always falls on the 15th day after the Spring Equinox, i.e. the 4th or 5th April. Great. Just what I need whe...I hasten to point o...

Saturday, April 22, 2006. Spring soccer is well underway. I know. That soccer is a fall sport, but some of us just enjoy beating our heads against a wall enough to play two seasons a year. Even worse, we coach. Now it seems I have to worry about the dogs. Until Clifford's mom shrieked and pulled him away. Um, he had lifted his leg on me. So now, I had dog hair, dog drool and dog pee all over me. Nice to her. I understood. I really did. If a dog is going to pee on anyone. Posted by herewegoagain at 5:52 PM.

Friday, September 29, 2006. I was working with the kids and their spelling this week. It was an odd list, to say the least. Words like "deceased" and "deathbed"? Anyway, we were going over the meaning of all their words (these were all words with a long "e" sound). Valise. Was difficult.then rowdy son started to sing, "Oh, I know,- it's like in the song". What song? I thought I had straightened out the actual song name, when we came upon deceased. On the list. "Oh! He chimed." Deceased Navidad. If we los...

Monday, February 27, 2006. I am so happy and sad at the same time. it really is like you're my little boy and you're all grown up now. (except when you were drumming at your wedding, then you were some hunky rocker i never knew). i think patty is so perfect for you, but mostly i think SHE got the best guy in the world for her forever love. Posted by herewegoagain at 12:46 PM. Tuesday, February 21, 2006. D Day minus 3. I cleaned my car. What on earth are you doing? Because I (and she! Will do anything to ...

Friday, October 20, 2006. I've been reading a lot of Ruth Reichl. Probably not a good thing to do when you are trying to diet (as I always am! Because she is the former restaurant critic for the NY Times (as well as editor of Gourmet magazine). Her biographies (the two I have read)- "Comfort Me with Apples" and "Garlic and Sapphires" are great reads.funny, informative glimpses into a world I will never inhabit. Oh, and recipes are included! But now I feel better realizing that in fact, I am a foodie.

Monday, May 29, 2006. This Memorial Day is especially poignant to me as it is my first one without my dad. He always told us stories of growing up in Central Florida in the 20's and 30's and the big deal Memorial Day was. There were actually Civil War vets marching in the Lakeland Memorial Day parade! Today we went to see Hailey. Hailey is part of a new generation that is shaping this country. I'm so proud when I see what it is doing to support our men and women in uniform. Here. Tuesday, March 28, 2006. OK, I admit it. I was worried that my little Dolly was, um, in the family way. As in "puppies", since she is my 7 pound chihuahua. I will say that I've NEVER been happier to NOT be a dog breeder than I was this afternoon as my vet literally laughed in my face when I worriedly had her check Dolly out. Have you ever seen. People in my neck of the woods throw breeding words out like it's something you can actually talk. Ever picked a farm fresh egg up from a nest? Yesterday was a ni...

Sunday, August 27, 2006. The next best thing is giving mr. herewegoagain a short list of "honey do's". And then having him DO them. Sigh. Happiness. Of course, they are always the very ickiest of jobs. (Otherwise, I would knock them out by my little lonesome, of course. But no matter, it had been cleaned as only he can clean. Then, with our sparkling rolling dumpster thing-y out at the curb, he put the offending bean bag chair NEXT to it. There, job done. Posted by herewegoagain at 11:15 PM. Very big: "I...

Tuesday, January 24, 2006. Yesterday we went to the grocery store. Oh, how I hate to go to the grocery store. My family will attest to this.it is not uncommon to find absolutely nothing in the fridge to eat but some questionable milk and old cheese. However, I never feel that I absolutely HAVE to go to the store until we are completely out of milk, bread, eggs, toilet paper,. And of course, chocolate. The good stuff to me. That way no one sees me. I was a bit annoyed and said pretty sharply, "No! This en...

Friday, December 30, 2005. To eat or not to eat. I need to not eat. Ever. It's gotten to the point where I think the phrase "suicide by eating" might be used at my funeral. But, you sort of, kind of, have. To eat. I mean, not me personally, because I could live off stored fat for at least a year. But people in general just can't stop eating. You have to eat "a little". A little chicken, a few carrots and no sugar. And smile while you're doing it. Have I mentioned that I have a weight problem? I'm a house...

Volunteering in Kos with human beings. The Times They Are A’Changing. October 14, 2016. Since I first sat down to begin to try and tell this story over a year ago, I have lived the best of times and the worst of times. There are no words that can truly sum up what this year has taught me or shown me but bearing witness to this time in our modern history will stay with me forever. We are all human beings and we all deserve to be treated as such. Peace, love and solidarity to all! September 29, 2016. One y...
