Charismatic Microfauna: Glass squid video

http://funwithkrill.blogspot.com/2014/07/glass-squid-video.html

Wednesday, July 9, 2014. This is a short video of a glass squid that was brought up in a MOCNESS tow from the deepest net, 800-1000 meters, on 2 September 2012 in the NE Pacific at station 7 (47.02172N 144.61145W). It got a bit damaged during the slow ride to the surface but was still alive. Notice the huge eyes, necessary for gathering light at great depths where it's pitch black. Charismatic Microfauna: September 2010

http://funwithkrill.blogspot.com/2010_09_01_archive.html

Tuesday, September 28, 2010. Has Krill Biomass in the Gulf of Maine been underestimated? Although Krill are small, they are very good swimmers and are known to be good net avoiders. The MOCNESS system we are using has two LED strobe lights which are thought to disorient the krill from avoiding the nets. Last night we wanted. To test if the strobe light actually allows us to catch more krill or if it’s just a coincidence. Feel free to post your answer in the comments. Our results seem to be significant!

Charismatic Microfauna: Arts and Crafts at Sea

http://funwithkrill.blogspot.com/2012/09/arts-and-crafts-at-sea.html

Friday, September 14, 2012. Arts and Crafts at Sea. Colored cups ready for deployment. The cups are placed in a mesh bag that is then zip tied onto the CTD rosette frame and lowered to 3000m (that’s almost 2 miles below the surface! Cups in the bag before deployment. Shrunken cups attached to the CTD rosette frame. Pressure increases with depth and forces the air out of the Styrofoam and thus the cups shrink. Shapes and text are deformed and distorted as a once 4 inch tall cup becomes a mere 2 inches!

Wednesday, September 19, 2012. Gareth here. We arrived today in Port Hueneme, California, just north of LA. The cruise was an enormous success. Charismatic Microfauna: October 2010

http://funwithkrill.blogspot.com/2010_10_01_archive.html

Saturday, October 30, 2010. Rough Seas on Georges Bank. Peter Wiebe captured a wave coming over the rail soaking the deck! Kaylyn here, reporting some bad weather out here on Georges Bank! We finally received our fixed HTI Green Bomber system working and we steamed out to Georges Bank. When we arrived we were faced with some pretty big seas. We were able to deploy the Greene Bomber so we can start collecting acoustic data! Deploying the Greene Bomber photo credit: Peter Wiebe. Friday, October 29, 2010.

http://fuzzysboat.blogspot.com/2010_11_01_archive.html

Back from the sea.

Japanese Braiding Instructins

Japanese Braiding (Kumihimo) Instructions. There are hundreds of different kumihimo stitches, some simple and some very complex, using different numbers of strands. A common stitch often taught to beginers is the simple 16-thread rotating stitch (Kongo Gumi). The pattern you get depends on how the strands are arranged at the start. In our directions, "strand" can be ribbon, yarn, fun/fancy fur or something else. Cutting your strands (ribbon, yarn, string, etc.). The most I have done is 5x4 (20). Now you'...
