Ranitomeya abdita

Ranitomeya abdita (Myers and Daly, 1976). The female specimen can grow up to 17.7 mm and males up to 17.3 mm in lenght. The body is uniformly blackish to dark bronze-colored with bright golden orange spots on the posterior areas of the upper arm and thigh. There are no information yet available on their diet, terrarium or husbandry and breeding, while only a single larvae was found in the leaf axil of a terrestrial bromeliad.

Ranitomeya duellmani (Schulte, 1999)

Ranitomeya duellmani (Schulte, 1999). The terrarium is relatively similar to the terrarium of R. reticulata. The temperatures in the natural habitat are about 22-23 C at night and 25-27 C during the day, which should be followed when keeping this species in a terrarium. The frogs are shy and secretive.

Ranitomeya imitator (Schulte, 1986). In this frog species, listed as least concern (LC) on the Red List, two forms are distinguished on the basis of their more or less constant color patterns and different distribution ranges, whereas a third, intermediate, form is highly variable. The highland R. imitator lives in Cordillera Oriental in the east of the Departamento San Martín, Peru, at 250-1,000 m a.s.l.

Ranitomeya benedicta

Ranitomeya benedicta (Brown, 2008). This frog species, labelled as Vunerable on the Red List, occurs throughout the Pampas del Sacramento, a lowland plain between the Huallaga and Ucayali rivers in central Peru. It is usually found at 200 m above the sea level, although individual specimen were discovered at 400 m a.s.l. in the Cordillera Azul. Their basic color is black, with a orange-red pattern on the head. There is also a bluish pattern on the frog’s back, flanks, ventral side and limbs.

Ranitomeya opisthomelas (Boulenger, 1899). However, the natural habitat of this species is nowadays reduced to forest remnants with the largest parts of the former distribution having been turned into livestock grazing in which the species could not survive. The larvae are, like in many other species, released into the water-filled leaf axiles of bromeliads.

Ranitomeya claudiae (Jungfer, Lötters and Jörgens, 2000). Living in the Caribbean lowlands and offshore islands of the Bocas del Toro Province in the Panamanian west, from sea level to 140 m above, the species R. claudiae, categorized as data deficient (DD) on the Red List, inhabits mainly leaf litter in primary forests where the temperatures vary between 24-27 C during the day and around 20 C at night.

Ranitomeya dorisswansonae (Rueda-Almonacid, Rada, Sánchez-Pacheco, Velásquez-Álvarez and Quevedo, 2006). The frog’s ground color is black or dark brown, with a reddish or orange pattern on the head and upper half of the back, as well as on the front limbs. There are two irregular yellow dots, one on the ventral side, between the front limbs, and the other on the underside of the head.

Ranitomeya defleri (Twomey and Brown, 2009). This frog species, ranked as Least Concern on the Red List, is known from only two localties in southeastern Colombia in Río Apaporis and Río Caqueta, where it inhabits undisturbed primary forest and rainforests. The presence of many small bromeliads filled with water is perfect for the frogs’ courting, breeding and later growth of their larvae. R. defleri appears to be a mainly tree-dwelling species.
