Grapes and Greens: revelations

http://grapesandgreens.blogspot.com/2012/11/revelations.html

Monday, November 5, 2012. No, I'm not going to get all religious on you. Sometimes though, sacred imagery can speak to the heart of the matter where words fail. This past week, we on the North East learned a very hard, sad lesson on how vulnerable we are to changing weather patterns. It has been impossible not to feel the pain of the tens of thousands of families left homeless in the wake of hurricane Sandy. With time on my hands as we waited day after day for services to be restored I poked around at so...

Grapes and Greens: January 2012

http://grapesandgreens.blogspot.com/2012_01_01_archive.html

Sunday, January 29, 2012. Celery takes a bow. Just as soon as I adjust to the inevitable cold weather, it gets warm again. As I begin to grow comfortable with balmy winter days, it suddenly snaps back to cold. Hard to know what to expect next. A sunny cold day this weekend had me wandering through Flushing Meadow Park ruminating on what to do with celery. The non-profit I work for. Bare trees say winter. Sixty degree weather says something else. What would potato salad or tuna salad be with out celery?

Grapes and Greens: back from the benefit

http://grapesandgreens.blogspot.com/2012/08/back-from-benefit.html

Monday, August 27, 2012. Back from the benefit. Tomatoes were piled high at every farm stand between Riverhead and East Hampton this weekend. How many could I carry? How many could I fit in the car was the question. I was on the East End of Long Island to cater a benefit for Wellness in the Schools. And my car was already stuffed with serving platters, ice buckets, cocktail napkins, everything we would need to host 200 guests playing tennis matches for a worthy charity on this magnificent summer weekend.

Grapes and Greens: July 2012

http://grapesandgreens.blogspot.com/2012_07_01_archive.html

Monday, July 30, 2012. And four teenagers. Ah, but that's another story. Brunch at home here in Queens is usually a batch of scrambled eggs with chives from the garden and re-fried rice with lots of sauteed onions; my husband's favorite meal. The excellent August issue of Savour magazine. Is all about Mexican food, and it got me hankering for a Mexican inspired breakfast. Fruit served in a single color looks so lush! S cookbook Local Flavors. Juice of one lime. 3 Tbs chopped cilantro. With the motor runn...

Grapes and Greens: spice and everything nice

http://grapesandgreens.blogspot.com/2010/03/spice-and-everything-nice.html

Monday, March 8, 2010. Spice and everything nice. No, not from my backyard, not yet. This time of year grocery stores are practically giving daffodils away. I got these at Whole Foods, three bunches for $5! My friend Katie and I share a passion for discovering the diversity of ingredients and food culture here in NY City. Katie has been exploring Ethiopian cuisine in particular for a while. She has posted her observations and experiments on her blog Party in my Pantry. Not having okra on hand she substit...

Artist / Blacksmith Charlie Spademan. The Blacksmith’s Garden. April 30th, 2010. In January of this year I received a call from Joan Furlong, a designer with Davies Associates Landscape Architects, LLC. Inquiring whether I had any interest in participating in a designer showhouse. Mansion in May. I decided that these seedpods would be my inspiration for two of the pieces I would create; sections of garden railing at one end of the patio:. And an arching arbor at the other entrance:. A Party in my Pantry: Spiced Cherry Chutney

http://bubbledancebrooklyn.blogspot.com/2013/07/spiced-cherry-chutney.html

A Party in my Pantry. Wednesday, July 24, 2013. A more savory option for all those pints of cherries, this chutney is sweet and tangy and pairs well with cheese, fish or meat, and is also great on its own with bread. Chefette stirring the pot. 2 T extra-virgin olive oil or grapeseed oil. 3/4 c finely diced onion. About 3 cups fresh pitted cherries. 10 dried apricots, julienned. 1 T chopped garlic. 1/4 t sea salt. 1/4 t freshly ground black pepper. 1/2 c sorghum molasses or maple syrup. In a small bowl, s...

http://openmouthinsertcookie.blogspot.com/2012/07/weekend-plans-cookout-nyc-2012.html

Open Mouth Insert Cookie. I bake and then I eat.and sometimes I just eat. Friday, July 6, 2012. Weekend plans: CookOut NYC 2012. Just a quick post before I retreat to the glorious air conditioning at work! This is the one time of year that I show up early to the office. But anyhow, the best part about having a holiday in the middle of the week is that when you have to go back to work, it feels like Monday, but hey, it's already almost the weekend again. Woohoo! I mean, there's a kimchi eating contest!

Open Mouth Insert Cookie. I bake and then I eat.and sometimes I just eat. Tuesday, February 14, 2012. Oh hello, blog. You remember me, right? I used to write here occasionally and post pictures of the food I've been eating? And ramble on and on for ages? And the photo above is a slightly lazier lunch, with tomato braised pork over rice and bok choy. Plus another winesap apple. But it could really use more filling. On another occasion, I picked up a zucchini quiche. Now this I approve of completely&#4...
