Willie | Growing Food on Staten Island

http://www.growingfoodonstatenisland.com/portfolio/willie

Willie compensated for the amount of land on the side of his home by building an elaborate trellis to grow several varieties of squash. He constructs stands underneath the squash to support them. He didn’t feel comfortable around the camera so I conducted the interview with an audio recorder. At one point I ask him why do you grow food? 2016 Growing Food on Staten Island.

Tom | Growing Food on Staten Island

http://www.growingfoodonstatenisland.com/portfolio/tom

Oakwood Beach, 2013. Tom lived at the very end of his block in Oakwood Beach, a neighborhood that was deeply affected by Hurricane Sandy. He accepted a buyout for his house from New York State and is moving to Midland Beach, another neighborhood affected by the storm. Tom explains his reasoning for staying close to the water and his feeling on the buyout. 2016 Growing Food on Staten Island.

About | Growing Food on Staten Island

http://www.growingfoodonstatenisland.com/about

Over five summers I estimate that I approached over 50 gardeners. To date, I have [28] video interviews. I never intended to spend five summers documenting gardeners, nor did I realize how loaded of a topic gardening could be! Like many Staten Island residents, I have fond memories of my grandparents growing tomatoes and other vegetables in the summer months. Realizing the importance of documenting folks like my grandfather, I continued on, always on the look out for my next subject!

Jack | Growing Food on Staten Island

http://www.growingfoodonstatenisland.com/portfolio/jack

I saw Jack’s greenhouse while volunteering in the neighborhood during the weeks after Sandy. I visited him and his wife, Lily, the following summer. Jack went ahead with his garden but chose not to eat of the vegetables due to fear of contamination. 2016 Growing Food on Staten Island.

Growing Food With Plant Lights – Grow Food to Grow Your Community

Growing Food With Plant Lights. Grow Food to Grow Your Community. An Overview of Hydroponic Gardening For Indoor Plants. February 23, 2017. One of the questions I get asked all the time is: what exactly is hydroponic gardening? What makes it different from regular gardening? Well, let’s see. Basically, hydroponic gardening uses more water. The word Hydro is Greek for water. That’s where the name comes from. What does that mean? It uses more water? Another variation is something called aeroponics. In ...

Growing Food On My Balcony

Growing Food On My Balcony. What This Is About. Thursday, January 27, 2011. One of the first veggies I planted on my balcony was a tomato plant; at the time of planting I put little consideration into creating an environment for my tomato plant that would allow it to flourish into a health fruitful plant. A couple of months later and a little more knowledge about tomato plants, I can see I was destine to fail from the start – I am lucky my tomato plant fruited at all. The pot to small. Achieving the requ...

Growing Food, Saving Seeds

Growing Food, Saving Seeds. Monday, 22 June 2015. Colourful Broad bean flowers. This year I'm noticing some lovely and unusually coloured broad bean flowers, a really nice mix of pinks, purples, reds and browns. Sunday, 9 November 2014. I'm a bit behind on quite a few things this year. I'd left the young plants, grown from seed a bit too long in their pots. They had become somewhat intertwined with each other and they looked weedy and a bit yellow! One of three pink flowering vines. For a little while an...
