The Day JFK Was Shot, Part 2: I was there. Birds reader and fellow blogger George Phenix was 25 and barely a month into a job as cameraman for (then) CBS-affiliate KRLD-TV on November 22, 1963, when he was assigned to cover President Kennedy’s Dallas visit. As the President's motorcade wound its way into the heart of the city, Phenix planted himself along the parade route and waited. Today, Phenix, who publishes Blog of Ages. Lives in North Carolina. I never thought rifle fire. The testimony of George R&...

Our plan for exploring France was to follow Vincent Van Gogh's path south from Amsterdam to the Mediterranean, with important stops along the way. It didn't turn out exactly like that. Nonetheless, we saw Holland and France through the painter's eyes. . I hope you enjoy this jaunt through the mountains and small towns of southern France. Bask in the sun by the pool at a bed and breakfast set in the middle of a working vineyard, with mountains as backdrop. Postcards - Summer 2012. Until then, enjoy this l...

The Day John F Kennedy Was Shot: Introduction. November 22, 1963 is one of those dates ingrained in our memory, if we were alive and aware of the world around us at the time. On Thursday, the 21st, we had a good idea where we were headed, individually and collectively. By that sunny Friday afternoon, we didn’t. The days to follow brought more death, fear, confusion and questions. By the Thanksgiving dinner on the following Thursday, I remember being simply thankful to be alive. Would other leaders be tak...

Eleven people rescued from a capsized boat hung onto a rope dangling from a Coast Guard helicopter. Ten were men and one was a woman. The rope was not strong enough to carry them all, so they decided one had to leave. Otherwise, they might all fall back into the water. They argued for a while, but no one could decide who should leave. Eventually, the woman spoke up. As soon as she finished her speech, all the men started clapping. Birds on the Wires. The Fall of the Berlin Wall: A few thoughts. So many knowledgeable people have weighed in this week on the legacy of the Berlin Wall, that I really had not planned to offer anything other than what I saw and what I read. I put this package together for those who missed it the first time, and there were plenty of people out there who did, including Germans. Two things struck me, however, as I was researching this project:. The power of propaganda. You couldn’t place a phone call from east to west...

Martin Luther King, Jr - Ordinary acts, extraordinary courage. Martin Luther King Jr, from Icons of the Civil Rights Movement, by Pamela Chatteron-Purdy. Today, in honor of Martin Luther King Jr’s birthday, I’ve decided to celebrate by taking a look back at the work he’s known for, although this complex man excelled on many platforms. No one can dispute the importance of Martin Luther King to the US civil rights movement. He was its guiding star and its most revered martyr. A Martin Luther Kind memorial ...

Postcards: Fall in New England. Fall in New England is generally short, but this year the show has gone on and on. Maybe it was the tropical weather pushed forward by a few hurricanes. Or maybe, the weather gods just went on vacation and forgot to flick the switch. Whatever, thanks! Color up here starts out slow in mid- to late-August and picks up steam in September. One week, you’re swimming in the lake; the next, night temps hover slightly over freezing. That water cools down nicely. Birds on the Wires.
