First data release of the Herschel ATLAS. Sun, 10/24/2010 - 15:49. The Science Demonstration Phase (SDP) data from Herschel-ATLAS has been released to the astronomical community. This represents the largest public release of Herschel data so far and will be a powerful data-set for studies of galaxy evolution. Maps of 16 square degrees of sky in five bands (100, 160, 250, 350 and 500 microns) will be available for download along with the catalogues generated by the H-ATLAS team. See the boxed area below f...

Herschel digs up the dirt on distant galaxies using cosmic zoom lenses. Thu, 11/04/2010 - 14:13. Of the Open University and lead researcher of the study, explained, "Our survey of the sky looks for sources of sub-millimetre light. The big breakthrough is that we have discovered that many of the brightest sources are being magnified by lenses, which means that we no longer have to rely on the rather inefficient methods of finding lenses which are used at visible and radio wavelengths.". Of the Royal Obser...

The Herschel satellite | Herschel Space Observatory
http://herschel.cf.ac.uk/mission
The Herschel Space Observatory. Herschel was the first space observatory to observe from the far-infrared to the submillimetre waveband, unveiling the mysterious hidden cold Universe to us for the first time. Its data tap into previously unexploited wavelengths, seeing phenomena out of reach of other observatories, at a level of detail that has not been captured before, allowing us to study otherwise invisible dusty and cold regions of the cosmos, both near and far. 14th May 2009 on board an Ariane 5 fro...

Galaxy Clusters from Planck | Herschel Space Observatory
http://herschel.cf.ac.uk/results/galaxy-clusters-planck
Galaxy Clusters from Planck. A distant cluster of galaxies. Where is it in the sky? In the constellation of Bootes. How big is it? The cluster contains hundreds or thousands of stars, spanning distances of millions of light years. How far away is it? The cluster is seen as it was over ten billion years ago, when the Universe was just three billion years old. What do the colours represent? See this object in:. At these earlier times the galaxies in the clusters were forming stars at much faster rates than...
