My musings about human behavior and how we can design the world around us to better accommodate real human needs. Friday, July 24, 2015. This Week in EID - Episode 64. This Week in EID - Episode 64. All of the topics this week seem to have a military side to them. This was completely unintentional – they were queued up to match our usual innovation/psychology/design/thought-provoking themes. I just noticed the trend as I wrote the weekly recap. How is that military? When they are engaged in activities de...

My musings about human behavior and how we can design the world around us to better accommodate real human needs. Tuesday, July 28, 2015. I am proud of my city today. I am a huge sports fan. I want the Boston teams to have fantastic facilities. But I still would never want public funding for them. These are total boondoggles. The team and their private backers get guaranteed revenue streams and the public (the taxpayer) is on the hook for the inevitable cost overruns. Same thing for the Olympics. The USO...

Stores like H&M and Zappos that are known for their fast fashion;. Business models like Zipcar car sharing instead of each person owning their own car ;. P2P sharing services for infrequently used items such as tools so that one item can serve a whole community;. Do you use them? What has been your experience?

My musings about human behavior and how we can design the world around us to better accommodate real human needs. Friday, July 10, 2015. This Week in EID - Episode 62. I think this was a particularly good week on EID. Here is why:. The research the Thursday article. On on-line trolling was based on was really fascinating. It had some great insights that I think are just as applicable to any kind of behavioral influence. Parents getting their kids to behave in one way or another comes to mind. Was a topic...
Human Factors: Wine Tasting Foolishness

My musings about human behavior and how we can design the world around us to better accommodate real human needs. Wednesday, April 15, 2015. As you have seen ( here. For examples), I am a big fan of expectations, priming, top-down processing, and the placebo effect. When you put all of these together, you can pretty much get anyone to think anything, even yourself. But there are also lots of positives in day to day happiness, productivity, and socialization. So here is my story for today. I had my doubts.

Smart Car Tech - Ergonomics in Design

The Quarterly of Human Factors Applications. July 30, 2015. I have a feeling that self-driving cars are somewhere in our future, although I won’t hazard a guess as to when. This inevitability stems from the reality that humans are simply not as good drivers as we think we are. We make more mistakes, some of which we never even realize because they don’t result in a crash. We are constantly distracted by thoughts from our lives that intrude into our minds and divert attention from the road. But with self-...

Human Factors
My musings about human behavior and how we can design the world around us to better accommodate real human needs. Friday, February 12, 2016. This Week in EID - Episode 92. This was one of the weeks at EID where we used a “one-of-each” kind of strategy. We always tie the content of the articles we curate back to human factors and ergonomics. But sometimes they fall into similar domains (such as user experience or decision making) and sometimes they don’t. The identity resonance article. You will be happier.

Fighting for a user-friendly world. Responding to an RFP. I have recently been involved in reviewing responses to a government tender. The RFP process in general has seen quite a bit of criticism lately, both nationally. But at this point in time it seems to be a process that achieves what it is intended to achieve. Currently we simply don’t have a well thought through alternative that is both fair and transparent, so I won’t get into the pros and cons of the method in this post. Provide a well structure...
