For the Love of History: February 2013

http://jimsfortheloveofhistory.blogspot.com/2013_02_01_archive.html

For the Love of History. Friday, February 8, 2013. A Replica Artifact To Illuminate Young Minds. An Original Cap and Lamp, Circa Late 1800's. Image Courtesy lebint.com. During the early phase of the California Gold Rush, most of the mining activity involved surface deposits of Placer Gold. As these deposits grew scarce, some miners began exploring for Lode or Vein Gold deposits below the earth's surface. Miners literally had to change hats and that simple fact lead to my idea for the perfect prop. Now ca...

For the Love of History. Wednesday, June 12, 2013. Making a Working Model of Eli Whitney's Cotton Gin. My wife's consuming interest in history rivals mine at times and her latest endeavor is a good case in point. She is currently raising a mini-crop of naturally colored organic cotton to learn about the plant and its product. Some of Lindy's Cotton, Day 67. Photo by Lindy Miller 2013. For the Love of History. Tuesday, July 16, 2013. More 19th Century Angling or Tackling Obscure Tackle. I lucked out recently and won a piece of early 19th century tackle known as a Clearing Ring, on an online auction. I recognized it from the illustration in T. F. Salter's 1823 "The Angler's Guide". It's a simple device designed to unsnag your line when it's caught on some underwater obstacle. Apparently snagged lines have been plaguing anglers since there's been anglers. My Original Clearing Ring. Label...

For the Love of History. Saturday, September 28, 2013. More Reconstructed History as 19th Century Baitquest Continues. Brown's Artificial Frog Bait. Note the position of the two hooks. To my eye though, Brown's depictions seem closer to nature than what the actual baits might have looked like. I thought it would be a good challenge to reconstruct these baits using period materials and from what I could gather, period techniques. Note the one hook and how the line. Frog "How-to-do" from Rhead's. Although ...

For the Love of History. Sunday, January 8, 2012. Further Digging Into Our Colonial Past, Uncovers a Truly "American" Clay Pipe. A Classic But Plain Chesapeake Pipe. From Emmanuel Drew, 1650-1669. Image Courtesy losttowns.com. Chesapeake Pipe Fragments Showing Typical Decorations. An Original Brass Pipe Mold. Note the Bowl Shaper and Vent Wire. Of the last Dutch clay pipe maker at work. Victorian Tailoring: June 2013

http://victoriantailor.blogspot.com/2013_06_01_archive.html

Monday, June 24, 2013. 1830s Broadfall Trousers: Pockets. Next up for the trousers are the pockets in the bearers. The first thing to do is to sew the bearers to the backs of the trousers along the side seams. In theory I could also sew the fronts along the side seams, but I figured it would be easier to maneuver without them in the way. The first pocket jetting is basted along the pocket marking, and lines are drawn in chalk where the pocket ends. I turn in the top jetting so it hangs straight down in b...

Early American Woodworking and Pioneer skills. Sunday, February 23, 2014. Log Cabins in Nebraska. Whitwer cabin after being used as barn. Horse carved from cabin log. What makes this story so interesting to me is that oak logs were used. There were few trees of any kind this far west in Nebraska, but this location was unique as it had a very large growth of oaks. The area was soon clear cut and the oak logs were used to build a flour mills in both Norfolk and Oakdale Nebraska. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Frontier Carpenter: November 2012

http://frontiercarpenter.blogspot.com/2012_11_01_archive.html

Early American Woodworking and Pioneer skills. Monday, November 19, 2012. I didn’t mean that as a pun. I forgot to take detailed pictures of my forge as Cincinnatus requested, but I did include a photo of the fire box and clinker breaker. I purchased it from Kayne and Son Blacksmithing Supplies out of North Carolina. Yes it was expensive, and yes I could have welded one up, but it was easier to buy one and in the end it will outlast and work better than anything I could have cobbled together.

Early American Woodworking and Pioneer skills. Friday, May 31, 2013. Stave Church and Norwegian Woodenware. Over the weekend my family and I vacationed as we always do in the Black hills. My wife was looking for things for us to do that we hadn't done before when she ran across an advertisement for a replica Stave church in Rapid City. I was a bit skeptical at first thinking that this must be some kind of tourist trap. Boy was I wrong! Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). I hope you enjoy my blog.

Victorian Tailoring: 1830s Dress Coat - The Reveal

http://victoriantailor.blogspot.com/2014/11/1830s-dress-coat-reveal.html

Thursday, November 13, 2014. 1830s Dress Coat - The Reveal. Look at those shoulders! Just look at them! The shoulders are the only part of this coat I just don't like. Maybe someday I'll update the coat to some 1840s sleeves instead of the earlier poofs that it has now. Yesterday I had my wife take some other photos in our living room. I thought I'd pretend I was reading. :). If this were the 1830s I'd be clean-shaven. November 13, 2014 at 11:57 PM. November 24, 2014 at 5:07 PM. Your outfit looks awesome!

Frontier Carpenter: Shrink Pots and Birch Bark Containers

http://frontiercarpenter.blogspot.com/2014/07/shrink-pots-and-birch-bark-containers.html

Early American Woodworking and Pioneer skills. Thursday, July 24, 2014. Shrink Pots and Birch Bark Containers. Some random projects of this summer. The shrink pot is made out of Chinese Elm and to my surprise is water tight. The spoon is carved out of apple wood. Of course all of this had to be approved by. My dog who is in charge of all snacks containing meats and gravies as well as anything photographed in her yard. She also loves to have her picture taken. July 29, 2014 at 6:39 AM.

Frontier Carpenter: December 2012

http://frontiercarpenter.blogspot.com/2012_12_01_archive.html

Early American Woodworking and Pioneer skills. Sunday, December 30, 2012. Dutch Style Tool Chest. I've wanted to make a better toolbox to store my eighteenth century tools in, but I couldn't decide on the design until the other day when I saw the one Christopher Schwarz posted on his blog. It’s a Dutch style chest that I've seen before in Jim Tolpin’s Toolbox Book. By the way happy New Year! Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). I hope you enjoy my blog. View my complete profile.
