Christmas mincemeat meringue cookies (dairy and gluten-free). Sometimes, when you’ve been baking way too many cookies and you say you’ll do just one more batch late in the evening, and you’re a little bit tired, you make mistakes you’re missing an ingredient, or you skip a step, or both. Sometimes, you do this and it’s a disaster, but other times, it works which is the case with these mincemeat meringue cookies. Is one of my favourite things to make with leftover egg yolks, by the way.). Dust your work s...

Foodies on Foot: An insider’s look at Toronto’s food scene | Kat eats local

Foodies on Foot: An insider’s look at Toronto’s food scene. This year I’ve had the amazing opportunity to judge the Ontario Culinary Tourism Awards. Which celebrate “Ontario’s best and brightest in culinary tourism”. From a large pool of worthy applicants, we chose a list of finalists. Earlier this year, and have been researching each one with the goal of picking a winner in each of three categories, to be announced at a gala on November 14. It’s a tough job, but somebody’s got to do it. 8221;), remember...

Roasted strawberries with balsamic and black pepper | Kat eats local

http://www.kateatslocal.com/2013/06/roasted-strawberries-with-balsamic-and-black-pepper

Roasted strawberries with balsamic and black pepper. I couldn’t help but try it out, served with plain yogurt rather than mascarpone or ice cream. It’s a perfect recipe, really: simple and easy to adjust, and yet with a flavour twist that many people will find unusual. Balsamic vinegar on strawberries is probably more common in fact, I’m looking forward to trying out the People’s Pops recipe. Share on Facebook (Opens in new window). Heartnuts: A nut that’s hard to crack. Michael was right. You do need a hammer, and like all nuts, some will be easy to open and some end up in crumbs. According to information on the interwebs, heartnuts. Are a variety of Japanese walnut. The tree apparently doesn’t grow true to seed, so certain varieties have been developed for grafting. According to this website. A variety called Imshu is grown in the Niagara region perhaps this is the one I tried? I can’t bear to throw them in the green bin. Is a cri...

Shopping | Kat eats local

Was at Fiesta Farms this evening and spotted (and grabbed) these frozen sour cherries from Nudefruit. A brand I’d never seen before. Perhaps it’s new? The fruit is 100% Canadian, no sugar added and mostly Ontario grown. They were already sold out of blueberries and raspberries no surprise, since they’ve got them on sale for $3.99 (from $4.99), way cheaper than other brands of frozen berries. I love frozen cherries as a dessert-like snack and in smoothies. Share on Facebook (Opens in new window). Click to...

Friday, June 17, 2011. I was raised by a beautiful couple. They had been married for nearly five decades when my mom died. Everything they had, is everything I want. Unfortunately I didn’t realize this until mom was on her deathbed. I am earnestly and eternally grateful for what seems to have been woven into the fabric that is me, by my parents. My dad remains, to this day, my hero. It was under his tutelage that I developed an unflappable work ethic. I followed and followed and followed. I believe in God.

What’s Cookin’? It’s summer and that means strawberries! I have made this pie a few times already and I think it’s my favorite pie I have ever had. Its light and so fruity! I used the pie crust from my other blog post for the Delicious Pie Crust (check it out). But you could always use any other pie crust you want! 5 cups strawberries, quartered. 1/3-3/4 cup sugar (depending on how sweet you strawberries are). 1/4 cup corn starch. 1 TBS lemon juice. 9 inch pie crust. Well, they’ve just announced they’re selling another round of shares between now and December 31:. Three levels of investment are available, starting at $200. Find out more on Monforte’s website. Kate at the In Gate | A Young Amateur's Take on the Horse Life

Kate at the In Gate. A Young Amateur's Take on the Horse Life. Guest Post: One Rider’s Battle with Anorexia Nervosa. Although the author of this post has chosen to remain anonymous, I commend her for the incredible amount of bravery and strength it took for her to write this. Her real-life experiences with an eating disorder should be taken as a warning, but her ability to overcome her battle with anorexia proves that the love of horses is an amazing thing. May 4, 2015. Kate at the Ranch

Kate at the Ranch. I spent part of my summer working at the Izee Ranch in Oregon. Come read all about it! Thursday, August 29, 2013. He asked us to take notes and take what he was teaching us very seriously. In previous years, we did not have the opportunity to learn about pesticides, so it was fun to learn something new! If we skipped just one hemlock plant along the way, that could kill a cow later down the road and the ranch could lose profit. Pressure! Ready to go spray along the creek! However, beca...
