Recession-Fabulous: October 2009
http://recession-fabulous.blogspot.com/2009_10_01_archive.html
Working for a Living. October 4, 2009. I hear parents talking about how expensive school dances are. The dress, the hair, the shoes, etc. The next year, planning ahead a bit, we found a dress in an outlet store in Branson, and spent $35. Much better. Much cheaper. And no one else had one. This year, I found a vintage dress at a Goodwill. The price? Thrift stores are full of beautiful formals. Some take a bit of imagination, although nothing so drastic as Pretty in Pink. Recession-Fabulous: May 2009

Working for a Living. May 21, 2009. A Cardboard Box and a Free Afternoon. When I was young there was nothing so fun as a whole afternoon and a fresh cardboard box. It still takes very little to keep me entertained. I get this from my mother, who once made an entire play-kitchen for me from a series of found boxes and a little poster paint. Move over, Little Tikes. I did a little searching and had a good laugh over the modern version the Box as Toy. Then give it to your kids. There's no need to tell t...

Recession-Fabulous: February 2012

Working for a Living. February 22, 2012. Save money AND save the world. In all our talk about saving money in tight times, we've neglected to talk about how to save money on utilities. Consumer Reports offers an article titled You can save $1,500 with these 4 strategies. Weather stripping really makes a difference. We added weather stripping to our front door, and the breeze that had been in the front hallway disappeared. You can, of course, spend a huge amount of money on new windows, but in a lot of ca...

Recession-Fabulous: August 2009
http://recession-fabulous.blogspot.com/2009_08_01_archive.html
Working for a Living. August 18, 2009. Good Eating in Hard Times. Let's get something straight before we start: I don't like to cook. As home chores go, I prefer laundry. But, with a husband and three kids, we can't afford to eat out all the time, either, even at "family" restaurants, like Dixie Cafe. Add your favorite fresh or frozen vegetable, and a bag of rolls. You are still less than $15, and the only thing you really had to cook were the potatoes. CC BY 2.0. Links to this post. August 15, 2009.

Recession-Fabulous: March 2011

Working for a Living. March 31, 2011. Sewing Revisted, Or, Not Your Mother's Home Ec Class. For many of us, sewing brings up memories of poorly crafted aprons made in high school to the insane specifications of a slightly-evil, slightly-crazy home ec teacher. Than to Target, being able to sew can be a godsend. If, though, you already have a sewing machine, and are a veteran of the poorly-made-apron-in-high-school experience, you can just start sewing. (Oil your machine first, though! If you need a refere...

Recession-Fabulous: About Us
http://recession-fabulous.blogspot.com/p/about-us.html
Working for a Living. A funny thing happened on the way to the Recession. Here in the South we've been living hand-to-mouth forever. In all this bailing-out and bonusing-up, the family still has to eat and baby needs a new pair of shoes. Recession? That just another word for "time to have a yard sale." So sit down, have a glass of tea, and don't look at your 401K for a bit. You deserve a break. Who are these women? Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Who are these women? Recession-Fabulous: Dreams and Compromises
http://recession-fabulous.blogspot.com/2011/02/money-is-always-tight-around-my-house.html
Working for a Living. February 22, 2011. Money is always tight around my house. My husband and I are both teachers, and we have to watch our money. In Kindergarten, American Girls. In first grade and H arry Potter. In second. So I bought Olivia some American Girl. S books. She was sort of interested. She was much more interested in the catalogs full of dolls, though. Samantha was retired. Strike one. I guess the moral to this story is this: How much is a box worth? March 5, 2011 at 2:46 PM. 2 A real doct...
